		Olinda is a small and rather beautiful settlement located 44 km east of the Melbourne city centre atop Mt Dandenong.
		The first European settlers in the Olinda area were the Holden family who camped on the slopes from 1855 and felled mountain ash until the turn of the century.
		Olinda was the only settlement in the hills to be formally laid out thanks largely to the efforts of John Dodd who opened the first shop in the main street in 1893.

		Arthur Streeton was born at Mt Duneed, Victoria in 1867.
		He studied at the National Gallery School from 1884 to 1887 and was apprenticed as a lithographer with Troedel and Cooper, Melbourne, until 1888, when he left to take up painting full-time.
		He was knighted for his services to art in 1937 and died at Olinda, Victoria, in 1943.

		We chose Arcadia Cottages in Olinda, which, despite the name, proved to be high on natural Dandenongs charm and low on the other stuff.
		There are four cottages on the property, but the grounds are so large and so covered in trees that you feel completely private in your own little residence.
		The cottages are ideal for wet-weekend couch-potatoing by the fire, but also handily placed for more outgoing activity, with national parks, gardens, a golf course and Olinda township in easy reach.
