Oliphaunts lived in the southern land of Harad, and were notably used in the siege of Gondor and the subsequent Battle of the Pelennor Fields on March 15th, 3018 of the Third Age.
The word Oliphaunt is a variant spelling of the archaic word oliphant meaning "elephant", "ivory", "elephant-tusk", "musical horn made of an elephant tusk", or "a musical instrument resembling such a horn".
Oliphaunt is also the title of a short comic poem about the beast quoted by the hobbit Samwise Gamgee, based on traditional bestiary lore.
Sam Gamgee hoped to see an Oliphaunt when he learned that armies of Men from the southern lands were going to Mordor.

The Oliphaunt may not rampage if it cannot reach the fourth square [it is occupied/blocked, off the battlefield, etc].
The Oliphaunt may only be hit by magic or ranged weapons, and has a thick skin [60 HP].
Tactics: It's very hard to get the Oliphaunt into position for a good charge [with more than one target], but when he is unleashed, the results can be deadly.

But on closer inspection it becomes apparent that this is a very big elephant, more like several woolly mammoths rolled into one than the comparatively tiny frame of say, Kashin, from Auckland Zoo.
This poor creature, photographed in a paddock at QEII Park on the Kapiti Coast, north of Wellington, must have died a painful death in the J.R.R. Tolkien books Peter Jackson's film is based on, judging by the number of spears thathave pierced its leathery hide.
The oliphaunt was a creature apparently similar to the elephant - but bigger - and, as the wooden contraption attached indicates, it was used as a beast of burden.
The last documented oliphaunts were seen in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields on 15 March III 3019.
While Tolkien acknowledged this connection, he thought olbenta to be a more likely direct ancestor of oliphaunt, which is just one of many variant spellings of the word going back into history.
Tolkien's choice of this word was perhaps influenced by the character of Sir Olifaunt, a giant knight who appears in Chaucer's 'Sir Thopas' among the Canterbury Tales.
He gave not a second thought to the vast armies that were allied with the White City; Arvatalar was cocky enough to believe that the oliphaunts would crush their enemies like army ants.
That was the signal that belonged to the Haradrim army.
With a thankful pat on the leg to his oliphaunt, he mounted with some difficulty, ignoring the throbbing pain in his nose, and saddled himself to the beast once again.
Oliphaunts are sighted by Frodo and Sam when the Haradrim that are bringing them to join Sauron in Mordor are ambushed by a Gondorian patrol led by Faramir.
The Oliphaunts are brought to battle by the Haradrim at the Battle of Pelennor Fields where they trample the Rohirrim before a counterstrategy is found.
Legolas is able to bring one down singlehandedly and then the King of the Dead and his army finish the rest of them off.
11-15-00: Nazgûl Bird or Oliphaunt?(Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-19)
The bird, ridden by the evil Nazgul, appears in JRR Tolkein's fantasy classic about the time of the Battle Of Pelennor Fields.
However, on closer inspection, and helped by a few clues from residents near where the filming took place, the newspaper now believes it may be part of an oliphaunt which in the book was similar to an elephant but much larger and used as a beast of war.
Large "rocks" to the left of the oliphaunt might have been launched by a giant catapult residents reported seeing on the set a few days earlier.
Mûmakil, also known as oliphaunts, are gigantic elephantlike creatures.
An oliphaunt's crew usually spends hours decorating their mûmak with elaborate warpaint prior to going to battle.
When affixed with tusk chains and making a gore or trample attack, a mûmak can attempt to trip the opponent (+29 check modifier) as a free action without making a touch attack or provoking an attack of opportunity.

Sam like oliphaunts well enough in poems and at a distance, but would be like one in the tater patch?
"*sigh* Ruby, there is no oliphaunt in the tater patch.
And besides, oliphaunts live leagues and leagues away, down south, past Gondor, even.
The rest of the day remains a mystery to me, as I simply needed to escape and get into bed before I lacked the ability to.
I missed the concert from Lingalad and Guiseppe Festa, which was probably the part I was most interested in seeing, but in another two hours, I'd be curled up under the Games Workshop tables, much like the Oliphaunt pictured HERE.
