Conant had a lot of power and it's very clear he thought, "Thomas Jefferson had this idea, but he didn't have the means to put it into effect; I, Conant, for various reasons, do have the means to put it into effect".
Conant's primary goal, as far as domestic life in America, was to break the hold of this old elite and put in its place, a new elite that would be made up of people from a national group, people from all over the country, people selected on pure intelligence, not on their background.
Conant had the ability to do a utopian experiment on the whole country and it worked, in a sense, although it didn't turn out to be a utopia.

Grimes and his friends, Houser and Conant, pal around together, get into minor scrapes, go see movies like NOW, VOYAGER, and spend a great deal of time poring over an educational sex manual.
Houser reads the manual as though it were the Bible and he a seminary student; Grimes is more interested in the practical aspects of sex and yearns for O'Neill, an "older woman" in her twenties who is married to absent soldier Scott.

We propose that an understanding of the historical roots of scientific literacy can help contemporary science educators to better address current and future controversies associated with the concept.
The term, "scientific literacy" originated in the 1950s (Conant, 1952; Hurd, 1958), but the elements associated with this concept extend much further back in the history of science education (Bybee, 1997; Hurd, 1998).
In the past two decades, however, there have arisen an unusually large number of vocal and reflective scientists who emulate Mach in publishing books and articles aimed at both popularizing science and advocating its increased emphasis in both school curricula and everyday life.
