Command of the Eighth Army was given to Lieutenant General Oliver Leese.
During the stalemate on the Winter Line, in early 1944, the Eighth Army was removed from the shore of the Adriatic Sea to concentrate all forces, except the British V Corps, on the western side of the Apennines in order to punch through to Rome.
During October, Leese was reassigned to South East Asia Command, and Lieutenant General Sir Richard McCreery replaced him.

Not only was Leese still banking on breaking out through a corps beginning to founder [British V Corps], but he made no effort on September 1 to move 1st Armoured Division rapidly north from its holding position to where it could enter any breach that was opened.
By 7 September it had become clear to Oliver Leese that the concurrent Eighth Army attacks by the Canadians and British V Corps on their left were stalled.

Surviving are his wife, Martha Lee Hersberger Leese; two daughters, Regina L. Baldin of Winchester and Rita G. Beeman of Ridgeley; two brothers; a sister; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

So called Fourth Battle of Monte Cassino was fought by polish 2nd Polish Corps under gen. Wladyslaw Anders (may 11-19).
First assault (may 11-12) brought heavy losses but also allowed the british 8 Army (gen. sir Oliver Leese) to break through german lines in the Liri river valley below the monastery.
Second assault (may 17-19 pushed the german 1st Para Division out of its' positions on the hills surrounding the monastery and the latter got almost surrounded.
