Oliver Letwin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Oliver Letwin PC (born May 19, 1956, Hampstead), British Member of Parliament for West Dorset, and Chairman of the Policy Review and Chairman of the Conservative Research Department.
He is a member of the Conservative Party and is the son of William Letwin, Emeritus Professor at the London School of Economics, and conservative academic Shirley Letwin.
During the campaign for the 2001 general election, Letwin, as shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, expressed an aspiration to curtail future public spending by fully 20 billion pounds per annum relative to the plans of the Labour government.

Scotland on Sunday - Politics - Letwin backs 'peace tax'   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
Letwin last night admitted he supported growing demands for a "peace tax" system, under which pacifists would have the right to prevent any of their income tax contributions ending up in the coffers of the Ministry of Defence.
Letwin’s support for the project is now bound to land him in deep trouble with his party, just weeks before an election, with the Tories desperately trying to prove that they are a credible party of government.
Oliver Haslam, a spokesman for the Conscience campaign, said Letwin had first offered his support for the campaign "a couple of years ago", before he made it on to the Tory front bench, during a face-to-face meeting in the House of Commons.

Although Letwin allows that the old figure will have to be updated ("the £20bn is out of the window in the sense that it was [calculated] about a year ago"), he believes that the sum was never a mad aspiration, simply an idea rolled out before its time.
