 Oliver Postgate
Oliver Postgate (born 1925) is the creator of the children's programmes Noggin the Nog, Ivor the Engine, Clangers and Bagpuss on the BBC in the 1950s to 1970s, some of the most popular children's programmes ever shown in Britain.
Postgate is the grandson of Labour politician, George Lansbury, some of whose principles he inherited, to the extent that he was prepared to go to prison as a conscientious objector during World War II.
Setting up their business in a disused cowshed, Postgate and Firmin worked on children's programmes based on concepts and scripts which mostly originated with Postgate.

About a dozen distinct sets of programmes created for children's television by Oliver Postgate and his collaborators (mostly Firmin) spanned the years from 1958 to 1986, and continue to be repeated and revered by generations of present and former little people of all ages.
Postgate's writing is, fittingly, as vivid as a colour slide-show, with the man himself present to change the slides, tell the stories and check from time-to-time to be sure that we're all sitting comfortably and enjoying the performance.
It is a great shame that whilst Postgate writes charmingly in describing his inter-war upbringing, he becomes increasily boring as he grows older in the book, and drones on woollily about his religious awakening, views on nuclear disarmament and the cancer that has sadly cursed several of those close to him.

After this, Peter Firmin and Oliver Postgate arrived where all the Merchandise was being sold, and an impromptu signing began, which they were both happy to do (and I luckily had my copy of The Pogles signed by both of them).
Oliver said he was Gobsmacked and that they hadn't seen the film in 30 years and thought it was lovely (and he clapped his hands together in delight).
Oliver replied by saying, 6 for The Pogles and 26 for Pogles Wood and that they are going through their rusty tins of film and putting together some of their favorite Pogles Wood episodes which will be released on video.

Oliver Postgate and Peter Mandelson share an unlikely pedigree: apart from being master puppeteers, albeit in different theatres, they both had a grandfather vital to the history of the Labour Party.
Determinedly unquestioning of his art, Postgate's life leaps off the page with a beguiling conviction, particularly when describing an epiphanic "peak experience" after an operation, which caused him to alter his view of the world and himself, and gave rise to the book's title.
Dropped unceremoniously by the BBC when they were deemed not to have the "hook" modern children desired, Postgate is now kept, in his anecdotage, by the wave of nostalgia which has engulfed his single-frame films, and which finally offers him a proper return for the pleasurable memories he's inspired in so many.
