In October, 1994, the Olivet College Board of Trustees unanimously endorsed what had come to be known as "The Olivet Plan", approving a new design for undergraduate education which would radically alter the fabric of the college and ultimately draw renewed national attention to the institution.
Beginning in the fall of 1994, Olivet College began an exhaustive, and exhausting, process of implementing the Olivet Plan so that students who entered the college in the fall of 1995 would become the first cohort of students to be enrolled under the new academic vision.
However, all of Olivet’s grant proposals were premised on the idea that, as a consequence of its reinvention efforts, the college would grow and eventually replace external funding sources with increased tuition revenue and other forms of "internally" generated funding.
