Mark Twain: A Biography, by Albert Bigelow Paine (chapter64)
Olivia Langdon was twenty-two years old at this time, delicate as the miniature he had seen, fragile to look upon, though no longer with the shattered health of her girlhood.
Olivia Langdon, on her part, was at first dazed and fascinated, rather than attracted, by this astonishing creature, so unlike any one she had ever known.
Young Langdon had been especially anxious to bring his distinguished Quaker City friend and his own people together, and two days before Christmas Samuel Clemens was invited to dine at the hotel.

REVIEW - The Courtship of Olivia Langdon and Mark Twain
In this introduction is stated the author's thesis: that Olivia Langdon and Samuel Clemens were extremely different from each other, and that through their reading and writing they were able to resolve their differences and forge a meaningful relationship that would last a long time and weather many difficulties.
Clemens, in his letters to both Olivia and to her father, appeals to their sense of propriety and piety as he takes on the guise of the spiritual quester, one who needs their support and prayers in order to clean up his life.
Although Langdon was ill much of the time that she was writing in her commonplace book, she rarely complains; she was, according to Harris, preparing "herself to deal with life crises, and her book is one index to her search for frameworks that would aid and sustain her when these came" (15).

REVIEW - The Mark Twain Encyclopedia
Another connection between Twain's life and fiction remains unestablished in the entry on "Letter from the Recording Angel." The essay mentions Andrew Langdon as though he were merely a fictional target of Twain's satire against hypocrisy, when in fact Langdon was also the first cousin of Twain's wife, Olivia Clemens.
Samuel L. Clemens arguably was and remains the most important writer yet produced by the United States, an author whose significance was vast during his lifetime and is still growing more than eighty years after his death." It then goes on to list Twain's diverse occupations during his life.
It also lists the editions that are currently the most authoritative--the ones prepared by the Mark Twain Project and published by the University of California Press--and identifies the correspondences between the editions in the inexpensive Mark Twain Library series and the more heavily annotated volumes from which they are derived.

Although this article is only two-and-a-half pages long, it is fairly thorough and should be invaluable to the general reader who is trying to evaluate and make sense of the various editions available--a situation that can only become more baffling in the next few years as electronic editions of Twain's writings become available.

 Mark Twain: "Cradle Skeptic"
During the period Clemens courted Olivia Langdon, Cross notes, Twain claimed to be a Christian in order to be acceptable to the Langdon household, but after the marriage, "Twain refused to participate in Bible readings and devotions on the grounds that he considered it would be hypocritical for him to do so" (10).
Cross claims that the religious skepticism found in Twain's last writings can be seen in his "most popular novels" (31).
Long, according to Cross, does not find Twain a skeptic but a Deist because of one comment Twain made to Albert Bigelow Paine: "There is, of course, a great master mind, but it cares nothing for our happiness or our unhappiness" (6).

The essay mentions Andrew Langdon as though he were merely a fictional target of Twain's satire against hypocrisy, when in fact Langdon was also the first cousin of Twain's wife, Olivia Clemens.
Twain's purpose, according to Macnaughton, was to call "attention to the burlesque intention of both the specific passage in question and the piece as a whole" (172-173).
Another entry that is very good concerns the editions of Twain's works, identifying his publishers at different periods of his life.
