Olney interpretation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Olney interpretation (also known as Olney Declaration) was United States Secretary of State Richard Olney's interpretation of the Monroe Doctrine when a border dispute occurred between British Guiana and Venezuela.
Olney claimed that the Monroe Doctrine gave the United States authority to mediate border disputes in the Western Hemisphere.

Olney et al.(1) expanded Olney's earlier work(1) with a study of eight additional infant rhesus monkeys and, using light microsco-py and the electron microscope, reconfirmed Olney's earlier findings(1) of hypothalamic lesions, and discussed the findings of both Abraham et al.(1) and Reynolds et al.(342) who had questioned his work.
Burde found the interpretation by Arees and Mayer,(1) that the lesion produced by GLU is limited to "microglia," to be puzzling, particularly in light of the fact that most of the cells of the arcuate nucleus are known to be small neurons.

Justice Olney clearly recognised (Olney J, Yorta Yorta: §117) that as a missionary involved in "attracting" the members of various Indigenous communities to Maloga, and suppressing "traditional practices" on the Mission, that Daniel Matthews was an "architect of further disruption of traditional life".

Progressive Informal Education Interpreted by the Founders of Kibbutz Education in Eretz Israel
As a literary device, it is clearly tied to value judgments that reflect the autobiographer’s and translator’s interpretation, and by implication, the historian’s retrieval and representation of the past.
This observation suggests that, having authenticated the archival document and identified the paratextual interventions of the author and translator, the historian must determine their meaning before selecting the evidence for an explanation of events, a process that once again entails a consideration of value judgments—but on this occasion those of the historian.
This view, though blurring the separation of the archival document as a historical source from its interpretation, recognizes the representational nature of evidence both in the autobiographer’s account of the self and, by means of historical criticism, in the reconstruction of events.

 The Commonplace Second Amendment
The line between interpreting the operative clause in light of the justification clause and interpreting the justification clause to trump the operative clause is of course fairly uncertain.
Legal texts should to some extent constrain their interpreters, and interpreters should try to subordinate their policy views (even if they cannot ignore them entirely) to the inquiry into what the text says.
One way of testing one's interpretive approach -- of distinguishing honest interpretation from mere inscription of one's own policy preferences on the text -- is applying it to a wide array of texts of different political valences.
