These aristocrats compete for Ivan's favor while they strive to outdo each other by building fashionable city residences and furnishing them in resplendent style.
Erik Axelsson Tott builds a castle at Olofsborg (Olavinlinna) near the border between Finland, then in Swedish hands, and Russian territory.

The first mention of firearms in Finland relates to Vyborg castle, in 1429.
The first Finnish castle to be built for use in the era of firearms was Olavinlinna (Olofsborg in Swedish) in the wilderness of northern Karelia.
The castle lies on an island in a system of lakes and inland waterways, and building work started in 1475 under the Swedes, mainly as a demarcation of the frontier.

The exterior is dominated by a strongly rusticated soapstone, expressive of the developing style.
Three blocks of flats in Helsinki followed: Fabiaaninkatu 17 (190001); Olofsborg (190002); Eol (19013).
In them a plastic, asymmetrical massing is related to innovations in interior planning: the linear sequence of rooms typical of representational middle-class homes gave way to a freer, more open ordering of space.

The best examples of Katajanokka's impressive Jugend are EOL (1903; Luotsikatu 5) and Olofsborg (1902; Kauppiaankatu 7), both designed by architects Gesellius, Lindgren, and Saarinen.
One of the most controversial buildings of Katajanokka is the white marble Enso-Gutzeit Building (Kanavaranta 1) designed by Alvar Aalto in 1962.

In 1896 Lindgren formed a partnership with Eliel Saarinen and Herman Gesellius (see GESELLIUS, LINDGREN, SAARINEN).
They designed a block of flats at Fabianinkatu 17 (190001) and three blocks of flats in the Katajanokka area of Helsinki: the Tallberg House (18978) at Luotsikatu 11, Satamakatu 7; the Olofsborg (190002) at Kauppiaankatu 7; and Eol (19013) at Luotsikatu.
From the interiors to the lively design and ornamentation of the exteriors, the style of these buildings with their free-formed layouts combines motifs from Finnish and international history with elements from the new European tendencies.
