  Manet Olympia Paper
Olympia proclaimed for those who knew anything at all of the past that her ancestresses were the Venetian Venuses of the High Renaissance, in particular Titian’s Venus of Urbino” (67).
Since Manet’s Olympia was a representation of a woman that possessed the role of a prostitute, her character was considered an outsider in the Parisian society.
The meaning behind this Olympia that drove his audience mad, was the fact that, “not only the pose, the interior scene, the motif of the fl servant, the fl cat on the bed but specifically the bangle on the woman’s wrist obliged the spectator to acknowledge Olympia’s heritage” (Hamilton 67).

When Olympia was presented at the Salon of 1865, out of all the paintings on the walls, and it is believed to have been thousands, it was Olyimpia that caused such an uproar that authorities were forced to put two armed guards at the painting to protect it.
The uproar at the Salon was a frontal assault on the established methods of painting and the Salon was "the field of battle" according to Manet.
Painted of the school of Baudelaire, freely executed by a pupil of Goya; the vicious strangeness of the little faubourienne, woman of the night out of Paul Niquet, out of the mysterries of Paris and the nightmares of Edgar Poe.

Culture Shock: Flashpoints: Visual Arts: Edouard Manet's Olympia
When Edouard Manet's painting Olympia is hung in the Salon of Paris in 1865, it is met with jeers, laughter, criticism, and disdain.
And he paints her in his own manner: in place of the smooth shading of the great masters, his forms are painted quickly, in rough brushstrokes clearly visible on the surface of the canvas.
In painting reality as he sees it, Manet challenges the accepted function of art in France, which is to glorify history and the French state, and creates what some consider the first modern painting.

NCAW Spring 04 | Phylis A. Floyd on Manet's Olympia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Alongside Olympia, the nude of Le déjeuner sur l'herbe is undeniably cruder: hair and hairdo, facial features; the proportions of her figure, and even the brushwork with which they are recorded are coarser counterparts to the elegantly coiffed and bejeweled Olympia.
A second attribute of Olympia, equally prominent in etched reproductions of the painting, is the bloom in her hair.
As for Olympia's gaze, Beth Brombert sums up several contemporaneous observations by noting that the nude's expression was critical to the work: "What may have offended the viewer of 1865 far more than the painting's disregard for established techniques of modeling and half tones is the brazen look that defies the male gawker.

 T.J. Clark: Manet in situ
In his readings of Impressionist paintings (Olympia included), Clark is engaged in an analysis of the all-too-frequently ignored fact that "the perfect heroes and heroines of [the] myth of modernity were the petite-bourgeoisie" (the socio-economic group that, strange as this might seem, included prostitutes such as the one presumably depicted in Olympia).
Clearly one such occasion was Olympia, which manages to describe both the prostitute's and the painter's own belonging to the (one and the same) class system, despite their respective and sometimes self-conscious detachment from or shifting within it.
Olympia is the obliteration of that text, and the putting of another in its place -- the text of literalness, the real silence of the body, the fact of being nothing -- another sacred horror, that of presence so unmediated that it has no sign.

The canvas, which was painted outdoors, seems to assemble the whole of Paris of the Second Empire -a smart, fashionable gathering composed chiefly of habitués of the Café Tortoni and of the Café Guerbois, which was the rendezvous of the Batignolles artists.
The painting's reclining female nude gazes brazenly at the viewer and is depicted in a harsh, brilliant light that obliterates interior modelling and turns her into an almost two-dimensional figure.
Manet painted his most luminous plein-air picture, Boating (1874), which was set in Le Petit Gennevilliers and depicted two figures seated in the sun in a boat.

My father always firmly believed that the painting on the reverse of the Wirth-Miller cornfield landscape was by Francis Bacon and sent photographs of it to either Christie’s or Sotheby’s in the late 1970s for their opinion.
The ‘dog’ painting on the reverse was clearly on the front at some stage, because it disappears underneath the stretcher on all sides.
Since the painting was locked up in Bonhams for the weekend, we suggested that we could perhaps make use of the weekend to seek further opinions, based on photographs of both sides of the canvas.

WebMuseum: Manet, Edouard: Olympia (via CobWeb/3.1 planetlab2.isi.jhu.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
In this famous painting, Manet showed a different aspect of realism from that envisaged by Courbet, his intention being to translate an Old Master theme, the reclining nude of Giorgione and Titian, into contemporary terms.
It is possible also to find a strong reminiscence of the classicism of Ingres in the beautiful precision with which the figure is drawn, though if he taught to placate public and critical opinion by these references to tradition, the storm of anger the work provoked at the Salon of 1865 was sufficient disillusionment.
The new life of paint and method of treatment in this and the other works by Manet that aroused the fury of his contemporaries had a stimulus to give to the young artists who were eventually to be known as Impressionists.

When guards posted in front of the painting failed to control the daily hordes, the picture was elevated to the ceiling where, another reporter noted, “you scarcely knew whether you were looking at a parcel of nude flesh or a bundle of laundry.”
The painting’s matter-of-factness showed that art need not be engineered to illustrate a value system in the old-fashioned way of allegory.

Guggenheim Collection - Painting - Manet - Before the Mirror
In 1865 Edouard Manet shocked Parisian audiences at the Salon with his painting Olympia (1863), an unabashed depiction of a prostitute lounging in bed, naked save for a pair of slippers and a necklace.
The artist provoked a similar scandal when his painting Nana (1877)—depicting a coquettish young woman in a state of partial undress powdering her nose in front of an impatient client—was exhibited in a shop window on the boulevard des Capucines.
Both paintings exemplify Manet’s use of seemingly improvised, facile brushstrokes that emphasize the two-dimensionality of the canvas while simultaneously defining form and space.

In fact, Olympia was widely condemned by critics of the time for precisely that reason — it was not customary to paint such woman in such a manner.
The way the painting was executed is also in a manner the critics called "childish" with obvious strokes and a very realistic "warts and all" impression.
The courtesan in the painting is perhaps identifiable with Mikage, while the Venus of Titian's painting is identifiable with Nemuro.
