The Olympic torch, a major part of the ancient Games, was brought back in 1928 and is carried with great fanfare and publicity to the host city where it lights the burning flame of the Games.
This is said to represent the Olympic spirit, supposed to be present throughout the Games and generally held to be a celebration of brotherhood, competition, sportsmanship, goodwill and peace.
Thus the Olympics also employs those who are responsible for the safe-being of the athletes and spectators, including police (city, provincial and federal) and even national troops or soldiers.

Athletes announce arrival with raucous song - Jonathon Green -
As befits our standing as a per-capita sporting behemoth, Australia's was a relatively grand affair staged in a two-tennis-court marquee erected on the bitumen plaza that serves as a buffer between the visiting, unathletic press and the inner, well-sealed sanctum of the athletes' sprawling two-up, one-down digs.
The mayor of the Olympic Village conducted the ceremony, urging us first to stand for what was apparently the Olympic anthem, a piece of cymbal-smashing, tuneless triumphalism that is all too rarely heard.
This was brave, given the sometimes ill-fated history of Australian flag bearers: in 1976 Raelene Boyle was disqualified in a 200-metre semi-final; in 1984 an error of course saw Wayne Roycroft eliminated in the equestrian three-day event; and in 1998 Rick Charlesworth led Australia's hockey team to a sad fourth.
