Ireland has entered some domestic English tournaments since the early 1980s, but becoming an Associate Member of the International Cricket Council in 1993 paved the way for participation in international competition, and indeed the 2005 ICC Trophy was hosted by Ireland.
Ireland's most famous cyclists are Stephen Roche, who won both the Tour de France and Giro d'Italia in 1987; and Sean Kelly, who won the Vuelta a España in 1988, the sprinter's green jersey in the Tour de France four times, and numerous single-day classics.
Ireland, being an island on the western edge of Europe and on the continental shelf, is perfectly suited for the sport of SCUBA diving.

 Michael Morris, 3rd Baron Killanin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1938, he enrolled as volunteer in the British Army serving during all World War II in the Kings Royal Rifle Corps; he also filled the post of brigadier of the 30 Armoured Brigade, and took part in the Battle of Normandy, receiving by the course of operations the Order of the British Empire.
In 1950, he became the head of the Olympic Council of Ireland, and became his country's representative in the IOC in 1952.
During his presidency, the Olympic movement experienced a difficult period, dealing with the financial flop of the 1976 Montréal Olympics and the boycotts of the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

Ireland was given formal recognition as an independent nation in the Olympic Movement at the IOC Session in Paris in 1924 and it was at the Paris Games that Ireland made its first appearance in an Olympic Games as an independent nation.
Significantly one of his first moves was to have the name of the Council changed from the Irish Olympic Council to the Olympic Council of Ireland which, of course, ensured that the name Ireland appeared in the title.
Ireland’s Lord Killanin (1914-1999) become President of the International Olympic Committee in 1972 and served until 1980 and he was then to become the Honorary Life President of the IOC.

The Olympic Council of Ireland (OCI) has accused the Athletics Association of Ireland (AAI) of deliberately missing the competition entry deadline for the Youth Olympics to avoid its athletes having to wear the Olympic Councils nominated gear.
In relation to the issue Terry McHugh, Chairman of the Olympic Athletes, released a statement stating: "It is regrettable that an accommodation cannot be reached between the Athletics Association of Ireland and the Olympic Council of Ireland, to allow young athletes the opportunity of competing at a competition of this calibre."
As chairman of the Olympic Council of Athletes Commission, my focus, at all times, is the athletes, both senior and underage, and again I feel this is a lost opportunity.

JJ Keane resigned by letter from the Olympic Council of Ireland on 27 March 1939 — the Olympic Organisation he had founded in 1923 and of which he was the first and founding President.
Keane was able to keep Ireland recognised as an All Ireland entity thereby maintaining the position for Ireland that he had achieved for both the Olympic Counicl of Ireland and the NACAI in 1922 and 1923.
His achievements such as his founding the Olympic Council of Ireland and the National Athletic and Cycling Association of Ireland, must be seen and recognised as memorial to him.

London's 2012 Olympic bid risks being derailed by a looming bitter turf battle between the British Olympic Association (BOA) and the Olympic Council of Ireland (OCI).
Olympic sources have told AFP that the BOA is also in the process of attempting to change their charter with the IOC to include the words Northern Ireland alongside England, Scotland and Wales.
Approximately 20 percent of the Irish Olympic team is made up from athletes from Northern Ireland, and such a loss would be a bitter blow to the Irish team said OCI officials.

Only months ago the Olympic Council of Ireland (OCI) and the Athletics Association of Ireland (AAI) were involved in a power struggle related to Olympic gear and athlete selection for the Irish team.
The OCI didn't recognize the AAI when it merged the Bórd Lúthchleas na hÉireann (BLÉ) with the National Athletic & Cultural Association of Ireland (NACAI) subsequently changing its constitution almost a year ago.
This decision, which was made at the OCI's Executive Committee meeting held last Monday was rooted on the AAI's process of association to the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) and that, the soon-to-be completed AAI constitution would be in compliance with the Olympic charter.

He has already used the Olympic pool, and said that other teammates were so overwhelmed by it's size that one of them actually wept.
