Olympic Fanfare and Theme is a piece of music written by John Williams for the 1984 Olympic Games, which were held in Los Angeles.
The first part (presumably the fanfare) is one minute long, consisting of about 45 seconds of upbeat and somewhat repetitious orchestrated music, which is heavy on the brass and percussion, followed by a very distinctive 15-second theme dominated by trumpets and horns.
Olympic Fanfare and Theme was awarded a Grammy in 1985.

The John Williams Web Pages: Olympic Fanfare and Theme
At the same time, the opening fanfare was to be played by herald trumpets at all of the medal ceremonies and official Olympic events, so it had to be based on the harmonic overtones these instruments were capable of producing.
The opening fanfare is in two pieces, a triad-based ascending motive for full brass adorned by thirty-second notes from trumpets, followed by more vigorous response from trumpets supported by an accented low brass pedal that generates additional excitement by entering on the second half of the fourth beat of each 4/4 measure.
Strings and horns state the broad, noble "Olympic Theme" with the "B" portion of the fanfare answering quietly in trumpets and woodwinds.

Earlier Saturday, the Olympic flame arrived in Los Angeles aboard a special Delta Airlines flight and was flown by helicopter to the coliseum for the lighting ceremony.
Olympic gold medalist Bruce Jenner opened the lighting ceremony outside the coliseum beneath two bare, anatomically correct statues which Atlanta Olympic officials reportedly had asked to have covered for the televised ceremony.
In a nod to history, the torch was passed to Olympic decathlon champion Rafer Johnson, the last person to carry the symbolic torch on its international journey to the 1984 Summer Games.

American Journey (Soundtrack) by John Williams
In 1984, John Williams added his unforgettable Olympic Fanfare and Theme to the unmistakable "Bugler's Dream" which was itself introduced in the 1968 Olympics.
For the 2002 Winter Olympics in Utah, Williams was commissioned to pen the main theme.
Next, despite its familiarity, The Mission Theme (10) used for NBC News' theme for a number of years, is an engaging track - especially in all the moments in between statements of the well-known theme.

The Shape of Days: The Olympic theme
The 1984 Olympic organizing committee commissioned composer John Williams to write a new fanfare and theme for the games.
Williams’ arrangement starts with Arnaud’s fanfare essentially as it was originally written (he added cymbal crashes to punctuate the tympani at the beginning) at slightly increased tempo, then repeats the theme with full orchestra, using the strings and winds to back up the horns.

The CBC Olympic theme music, heard when coverage begins and occasionally at commercial breaks, can be described as musically formulaic and uninspired.
By contrast, the Olympic Fanfare and Theme used by NBC is, quite simply, a brilliant piece with which to inspire a national imagery.
It begins with Bugler's Dream, a fanfare by Leo Arnaud that was premiered during the 1968 Olympic Games in Grenoble (this is recognizable by the opening intervals that, ironically, are the same as the opening three notes to O Canada).

Having said that both the Olympic Fanfare and Theme as well as The Olympic Spirit are both very entertaining and provide yet more proof that when it comes to the rousing and brassy, John Williams is almost unsurpassable.
The rest of the album is quite a mixture, but the overall ambiance is either hymnal appreciation for human achievement and endeavour or rousing fanfare.

The even-handedness Williams has used in choosing his pictures is apparent throughout, with snippets from such diverse films as THE REIVERS, EMPIRE OF THE SUN, JFK, SEVEN YEARS IN TIBET, and ROSEWOOD strewn about the more bombastic classics.
Particularly impressive among this lot are his triumphant and noble "Olympic Fanfare and Theme," and the glorious adagio of "Born on the Fourth of July." Williams' alternately inspired and mathematically precise method of scoring should pleasure anyone grateful for intelligent film music.
The concert arrangements of the themes are certainly capable, but the tempered missteps of "Cadillac of the Skies" and the too-up-tempo "Schindler's List" are examples of where this package could be better.
