Olympic Oval - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Olympic Oval in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, is a covered speed skating oval built for the 1988 Winter Olympics.
It was not until the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah that most of these records were broken at Utah Olympic Oval, a facility not only similar in name but in operation as one of few covered, climate-controlled speed-skating facilities in the world.
Along with the 400 m long-track speed skating oval the Olympic Oval also includes two international-sized ice rinks for short-track speed skating and ice hockey, as well as a 450 m running track surrounding the main oval, an eight-lane 110 m sprint track, a pole vault box and a long-jump pit for year-round athletics training.

Winter Olympic Games - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 1940 Winter Olympics had originally been awarded to Japan, and were supposed to be held in Sapporo, but Japan had to give the Games back in 1938, because of the Japanese invasion of China in the Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945).
Jacques Rogge, presiding over his first Olympics as IOC president, told the athletes of the host country that their nation was overcoming the "horrific tragedy" of that day and the IOC stands united with them in promoting the committee's ideals.
The opening ceremonies for the Olympics were the last ones to be held outdoors for a Winter Olympics until at least the 2014 Winter Olympics because the ones for the 2010 Winter Olympics will be held indoors.

Another track event is the pursuit, in which racers begin at opposite sides of the circuit and attempt to catch each other.
The Olympics include road races, but the best-known road events are grueling multiday races, especially the Tour de France (begun in 1903), which covers some 2,500 mi (4,000 km) in more than twenty daily stages.

One of the critically important factors in maintaining a speedier ice was the Oval’s low, white roof which helped reduce the volume of the building and the energy needed to condition the venue.
Because the roof is not supported by a traditional truss structure, the Utah Oval stands at only 55 feet high, compared to Nagano’s 100-foot-high and Calgary’s 80-foot-high speed skating ovals.
In the end, the Utah Olympic Oval design team showed that achieving aesthetics, performance and sustainability with one-tenth of the budget for the previously built enclosed oval in Nagano was possible.
