Several provinces (yes, the provincal governments) have proposed their characteristic fingues to be the Olympic mascot.
Jiangsu proposed the Monkey King, Sichuan proposed the Grand Panda, Qianghai proposed the Tibetan antelope etc etc. Many of them think that if the Olympic mascot is come from their province, they will be better known internationally, and will bring economic benefit to them.

Yeah, but panda was the mascot of the 1990 Asian Games of Beijing and it could be a little repetitive...
I hope that these are signs that Beijing is going to go to a more traditional-type mascot rather than the Athena-Thevos, Snowlets, Izzy, Cobi type of monstrosities.
