Olympos by Dan Simmons is the sequel to Ilium.
While there are a lot of different things going on in Olympos Simmons does a fabulous job of keeping the story moving at a brisk and exciting pace and he makes it easy for the reader to follow the big picture as the plotlines converge toward a conclusion.
Olympos also answers most of the questions left hanging in Ilium and are better viewed as one long novel than separate works.

Olympos was one of the main cities in the ancient region of Lycia, forming part of the Lycian confederacy.
Olympos was first mentioned in historical records in 78 BC when the Roman Governor in Cilcilia, Servilius Vatia defeated the chief pirate Zenicetes in a naval battle.
Olympos became the seat of a bishop during the christianisation of the Roman Empire, but from the third century onwards renewed attacks from pirates brought the city into a slow decline and a gradual loss of the cities importance.

Olympos concludes the story begun in Illium (it is not a sequel, as is sometimes mistakenly stated).
While "Olympos" may not be a sterling example of Dan Simmons' best science fiction, it is still nonetheless an impressive literary achievement and one worthy of potential recognition as among the finest science fiction novels published this decade in the English language.
Olympos picks up where Ilium left off: On Mars, where the Trojan War has been lived again, the scholic Hockenberry has changed the course of events and started the Greeks and Trojans in a joint war against the gods--but the gods have plans to restart the war between the mortals.

But usually it's a problem for the wrong reasons; i.e., the classic case of talent failing ambition, an author's chops not being quite up to the task of pulling off what he or she is attempting.
Olympos is precisely the opposite: a book that delivers so much so effectively, you might find yourself running to keep up.
Opening up a wormhole into a parallel universe, they have meddled directly in the Trojan War as it was being fought on that universe's alternate Earth, and have resurrected several academics from their own Earth's past — "scholics" — for advice based on the scholics' expertise on all things Homeric.

Olympos continues the story begun in 2003's Ilium, so a "summary" of the tale so far is in order.
Eventually, through Hockenberry's coerced intervention, the war for Ilium and its parallel battle on Olympos are altered from their historical course, and the Trojan and Achaean heroes turn against the gods.
Olympos is quite a bit longer than it needs to be; he's a good descriptive writer but tends to go on too much with his descriptions.

Traditionally regarded as the heavenly abode of the Greek gods and the site of the throne of Zeus, Olympos seems to have originally existed as an idealized mountain that only later came to be associated with a specific peak.
The most favored mythological choice is the tallest mountain range in Greece, the Olympos massif, 100 kilometers southwest of the city of Thessaloniki in northern Greece.
These gods and goddesses did not actually live upon Olympos, rather the ancient myth can be understood to be a metaphor for the power of the sacred mountain.

Mt Olympos - Cyprus - Mark Moxon, Travel Writer
People come to Mt Olympos for one thing – fun – and that's what makes it much less daunting to those of us for whom being on the piste is strictly a Saturday night event.
For your C£7 half-day ski pass you get access to all four runs, though when we visited one of the lifts wasn't running, restricting us to three pistes, and as two of those were on the other side of the summit to the ski hut, we didn't venture off the beginners' slope of Sun Valley.
The peak of Mt Olympos is home to one of three corners of Cyprus that are forever England – the others being the Akrotiri and Dhekelia Sovereign Bases – and from the top of the ski run it looks like the result of a particularly perverted ice cream fantasy.

Of these, Prospero and Miranda are portrayed as the most sympathetic characters, while the witch Sycorax does not feature heavily until towards the end of Olympos (where she takes on the role of Circe in The Odyssey), Caliban and Setebos are villains and Ariel is a sometime-ally of Prospero with its own agenda.
Their name derives from that of Wilfrid Michael Voynich, who in Olympos is found in a disastrous time-travelling experiment to have created the Voynich manuscript as an elaborate hoax.
