Kyushu's smallest prefecture, Saga is located on the northwest corner of the island, bordered by the Genkai Sea and the Tsushima Strait to the north and the Ariake Sea to the south.
The City of Saga, the Towns of Morodomi, Yamato and Fuji and the Village of Mitsuse are planned to be merged to form the new City of Saga on 1 October 2005, which will then supplant Karatsu as the prefecture's largest metropolitan area.

Two random high school girls I was sitting in McDonalds in Saga City eating my "Bigu Macu seto" when two random high school girls sat down with me and started talking to me. At the time I was feeling very lonely and just wanted some conversation, and here they were.
We talked about a bunch of superficial things (how old we are, where I'm from, do I have a boyfriend/brother/sister/dog/cat, and what do I think of Japan), but it was so refreshing to see such curiosity from two very brave girls.
Omachi kids I haven't met many of the students I'll have, but everyone I've met so far have bent over backwards to know me. They'll ask me to pose for a picture with them, sing karaoke with them, or try to talk with them.

My stop for Omachi is 5 stops from Saga, with usually a switch of trains in Hizen Yamaguchi, which is one stop from Omachi.
Anyway, the second weekend I was here, I went to a meeting in Saga City, then to dinner at a beer garden on the roof of a hotel, then to Swaggys, a popular hangout with the JETs owned and operated by this guy from Australia.
I thought to myself that I had been mistaken, and rode for three more stops before I got off and asked the conductor, who spoke not a word of english, but I gathered that I was supposed to change trains in Hizen Yamaguchi and was on the wrong train since I had not.

We kissed business class behind and flew coach for an hour and a half to the brand-spanking-new Saga airport.
Once there, we got our luggage and were whisked off by bus to the Saga Prefectural office for this ceremony thing.
They took me to a Japanese restaurant for lunch, and I had this fried pork cutlet, some NASTY soup, and rice, which I successfully ignored.

A man used a judo throw to scare off a bear that attacked him while he was picking mushrooms on a Nagano Prefecture mountain Monday afternoon, police said Tuesday.
At around 3:50 p.m., Keiichi Yamaguchi, 63, a resident of Matsuda, Kanagawa Prefecture, was picking mushrooms on a mountain in Omachi, Nagano Prefecture, when an Asiatic fl bear suddenly attacked him, police said.
The bear bit Yamaguchi on the hand and left thigh and he responded by hitting it on the nose and in the stomach.
