Omagh (Irish Gaelic, An Ómaigh) is the county town (and largest town) of County Tyrone in Northern Ireland, situated where the rivers Drumragh and Camowen meet to form the Strule.
Omagh is the birthplace of internationally renowned song writer Jimmy Kennedy, who wrote Red Sails in the Sunset, the Hokey Cokey and The Teddy Bears' Picnic.
Omagh is currently twinned with the town L’Hay Les Roses in France.

The arms granted to the Council on 26th April 1978 are Vert a pall wavy reversed Argent between in chief two garlands each of ten ears of wheat and enclosing a bulls' head caboshed and in base a castle of three towers all Or.
The rural areas around Omagh are suggested by two gold bulls' heads, each enclosed within a garland of ears of wheat resembling the letter 'O', to represent mixed farming.
The shield gold three-towered castle, is the stronghold of the O'Neills, and also indicates the history of Omagh as a fortress and garrison town since the mid-fifteenth century.

 News and Events - Omagh Arts Centre gets underway
This morning (March 7 th) at 11.30am, the main construction contract for the build was signed at Omagh District Council’s offices at The Grange, followed at 12.30pm by the cutting of the sod at the cleared former Town Hall site on the banks of the River Strule.
The Arts Council of Northern Ireland awarded Omagh District Council a National Lottery Capital grant of £4 million in 1999 for the new Arts Centre scheme – the largest Capital award made by the Arts Council to date.
The new Omagh Arts Centre is to be situated off the Main Street, the chief thoroughfare of the town, behind what was the original Omagh Town Hall (now demolished) and in front of the Strule River.

An act of remembrance has taken place in Omagh to mark the second anniversary of the car bomb in which 29 people were killed.
Also present were the chairman of Omagh District Council and Jim Sheridan, chairman of Buncrana Council.
Victor Barker, whose son James was one of the 29 killed in the explosion, said that relatives of the dead believed there were people in the Republican community who could help convict the bombers.

The Housing and Planning summer school, held in Dublin, Belfast and Omagh, was organised by Queen's School of Environmental Planning and the University of Ulster's School of Social and Community Sciences.
Proposals were completed and presented to councillors and the community in Omagh and Gortin who were impressed by the professionalism of the schemes and the range of ideas.
It was also an excellent illustration of co-operation between universities, professional organisations and local councils, north and south of the border, which had presented a positive image of Northern Ireland to international students and professional institutions.

Relatives of the Omagh bomb victims have met with Victims' Minister David Hanson to discuss the delay in erecting a memorial stone.
However, earlier his party colleague Councillor Sean Clarke said: "Omagh council has unanimously agreed to unveil a memorial stone in 2008, to mark the 10th anniversary of the tragedy and the council has also unanimously agreed the wording of the inscription."
In a statement, Omagh District Council said the working group believed "it was essential to create a memorial which would be valued and respected by the whole community".

 Omagh Poor Law Union and Workhouse
Omagh Poor Law Union was formally declared on the 9th May 1839 and covered an area of 272 square miles.
However, as conditions worsened, the whole workhouse was turned over for use as a temporary fever hospital, with able-bodied inmates being rehoused in Omagh.
The entrance block was later used as offices by Omagh Rural District Council but was demolished in in around 1962.

At Omagh WadoKai we are proud of our links with Japan, from the club’s inception we have maintained a strong association with a host of top Japanese Sensei.
The emphasis has not changed over the years, the club is still dedicated to training in traditional Japanese Karate and we encourage young and old to join in and ‘have a go.’ We have earned a reputation for our hard training and competitiveness and believe that there is much to be gained through Karate.
