The Omaguas, Umanas, or Cambevas, ("flat heads") is a tribe of South American Indians of the Amazon valley.
Fabulous stories about the wealth of the Omaguas led to several early expeditions into their country, the most famous of which were those of George of Spires in 1536, of Philipp von Hutten in 1541 and of Pedro de Ursua in 1560.
The Omaguas are still numerous and powerful around the head waters of the Japura and Uaups.

 Cabeceras Spring 2005 Update
Omagua was once the most widely spoken language in the Amazon Basin, with as many as 1.5 million speakers.
Fortunately, in 2003 Catherine made connections with members of the Omagua community who are enthusiastic about documenting their language and history, and with that groundwork laid, Cabeceras began a collaborative effort with them to document the language, history, and culture of the Omaguas.
As a contribution to this goal, this year team members developed educational materials and an Iquito language program which is currently being taught in the community school by the community linguists and the Iquito language specialists, a group of four elderly speakers who have been working with the project.

 Language
Language families can be divided into smaller phylogenetic units, conventionally referred to as branches of the family, because the history of a language family is often represented as a tree diagram.
Languages that cannot be reliably classified into any family are known as language isolates.
A language isolated in its own branch within a family, such as Greek within Indo-European, is often also called an isolate, but such cases are usually clarified.

I should add that many of these dialects, as the Moorish and Berber Arabic, the Spanish of Majorca, the Provencal French, the Italian of Sicily and Sardinia, and the language of the Grisons or Graubünden, might most justly be described as separate languages, at least as regards the difficulty of acquisition.
