Omaha, Nebraska - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Omaha was chosen as the eastern terminus of America's first transcontinental railroad in 1862 with the passage of the Pacific Railroad Act.
Omaha's growth was accelerated in the 1880s by the rapid development of the meatpacking industry in South Omaha; in the 1880s, Omaha was the fastest-growing city in the United States.
Omaha is home to the Omaha Community Playhouse, one of the most famous and best-endowed community theaters in the United States, and to Girls and Boys Town; its Henry Doorly Zoo is widely considered one of the premier zoos in the world.

Omaha is also trying to capture the attention of those folks who might snub Omaha, whose response to the sincere enthusiasm of the "O!" campaign would be a deflated "oh," who would never think of the American hinterlands as a source of fine dining, historic districts and thriving urban landscapes.
Omaha has long since caught up to Boys Town and moved well beyond, but the "village," situated on 900 acres, remains self-sufficient and operates its own fire department, police station, post office, two churches and two schools.
Omaha lacks the cynicism of the East Coast and for that reason will never be all that hip, despite the rock scene and the Old Market and the new skyscrapers.

The sound was distressing, and my interest in this music was not aroused until I perceived that this distress was peculiarly my own, every one else was so enjoying himself (I was the only one of my race present) that I felt sure something was eluding my ears.
Fletcher's long association with the Omaha people began at an 1880 Boston literary gathering with an introduction to Francis and Susette La Flesche, the son and daughter of Omaha chief Joseph La Flesche, who were touring the East Coast in an effort to raise support for their endangered kinspeople, the Poncas.
Although she is best known for her work on Omaha music and culture, she also published a study of the Pawnee Hako ceremony with the collaboration of Pawnee ethnologist James R. Murie, as well as articles on a variety of Indian subjects.

Cursive melds together the sounds of strangely detuned guitars, organs and (later on) cello all accompanied by the narrative storytelling lyrics provided by Kasher.
Burst and Bloom is an EP that introduces a fuller sound due to a new addition, cellist Gretta Cohn.
Where all of this may sound depressing and you've realized how pathetic Kasher appears, the music and lyrical approach to this material allows the listener to enjoy what they hear without surrendering to the emotions conveyed.

Gretta Cohn was recruited and the Cursive sound was further characterized, in some respects, by an even greater melancholy and by a new graceful melodic layer.
Tritely tagged "emo" by writers everywhere, the Omaha Sound is as varied and complex as the "Athens Sound," and Kasher's penchant for conceptual albums and textures are giving him and his bandmates a sound all their own.
The resulting sound is refreshingly difficult to peg and fun to listen to as it stretches your heart and draws you in.

Oberst was hailed (plausibly) as a genius, celebrated (prematurely) as the voice of a generation and described (accurately) as a cult heartthrob - after he performs, there's usually a cluster of young, female fans waiting by the stage door.
Oberst is not quite a celebrity in Omaha (he still gets carded at some of the local bars), and yet he is inching closer to national renown.

Last night's Owen show at The 49'r has to be a new low in terms of rude Omaha crowds.
They were so loud that you couldn't really talk to the person standing next to you, which is to be expected from their style of post-punk rock.
