Warship Pictorial No.6: Omaha Class Cruiser   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Outdated in appearance even when they were first designed, the ten ships of the Omaha class were the first of the US Navy's 'modern' cruisers to be built in the post-WW1 era.
They were to serve around the world showing the flag in the interwar years and to give valued service during the Second World War.
Titles in developement include the Arleigh Burke class as well as other USN types from pre-war to modern times.

The Omaha derivative with four turrets was proposed, however, as the follow-on to the Omaha class.
The Navy believed it needed large numbers of scout cruisers (they would not be known as “light cruisers” until 1930) to screen the battle fleet, lead detroyer flotillas, protect lines of communications and, of course, to scout.
The battle cruiser designs grew out of a requirement to back scouting forces with heavy firepower; where British battle cruisers were enlarged armored cruisers and German ones actually fast battleships, American battle cruisers would have been massively overgrown scout cruisers, with little to no armor.

U.S. Cruisers   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The cruiser is, per definition, the smallest ocean-going warship capable of independent operations, meaning operations in which the cruiser is the largest capital ship.
Along with the design of new battleships, or ships-of-the-line, thus came the construction of two types of cruisers: armoured cruisers, which were intended to serve in "real" fleet actions, meaning battles, and light cruisers, that, with their lighter armament and armor could carry more coal and thus go further.
Those who have stated that the US cruisers were at a disadvantage without them, and that their removement was a great failure, seem not to understand the situation that the US was to find in battle.

Those cruisers bore the brunt of the fighting in the Pacific until 1943 and took the heaviest losses (7 out of 10 US cruisers lost during the war).

We love that the manufacturers are chasing the performance trend and finally granting cruisers some of the qualities they should've had all along--like lighter chassis, good brakes, decent suspension and more useable power.
We learned that big-twin cruisers are no longer one class of motorcycle, and that this test would require more than one winner.
At the most basic level, the two engines are the same, with the same 45-degree V angle, offset crankpins to eliminate vibration, lower-end shafts in the same places, overhead cams operating three valves per cylinder, additional oil supplying some of the cooling, and five speeds with shaft final drives.
