He was engaged in the geological survey of the Lake Superior iron and copper region from 1845 till 1847, and in 1848 became a lawyer in Port Huron, Michigan.

A second meeting on May 16 resulted in appointment of a committee to draw up a constitution modeled on one for the American Association for the Relief of the Misery on Battle Fields-an earlier organization (1866-1872) that had promoted U.S. support of the Geneva Convention.
