Wetar Strait - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Wetar Strait (Indonesian: Selat Wetar) separates the eastern part of the island of Timor from the island of Wetar.
To the west is Atauro, and beyond it the Ombai Strait; while to the east is the southern part of the Banda Sea and the southernmost of the Maluku Islands.
At its narrowest point, the strait is 36 km across.

2002 VOC Duyfken Voyagie:   Captain's Log
Last night the wind had increased to a good breeze and we made it clear of the Ombai Strait, or so we thought.
I initially was hoping it was a wind line, however it soon became apparent that it was the current going in the opposite direction to the swell and kicking it up.
Sure enough the GPS was recording that we were heading back towards the Strait at a handsome speed of 2 knots.

An array of shallow pressure gauge pairs is used to determine shallow geostrophic flow relative to an unknown mean velocity in the five principal straits that separate the eastern Indian Ocean from the interior Indonesian seas (Lombok Strait, Sumba Strait, Ombai Strait, Savu/Dao Straits, and Timor Passage).
The flow structure in the upper 200 m is seen to be similar in Lombok, Sumba, and Ombai Straits, with a division into two layers, governed by different dynamics, where the upper layer episodically flows away from the Indian Ocean.
Laterally, flow tends to be strongest in the deepest parts of the channel, with the exception of Lombok Strait which shows a consistent intensification of flow toward the western side.

 EarthRef.org Reference Database (ERR) -- Arief & Murray 1996
Shallow pressure gauge data (sea level) inside the strait during the current meter observations were of limited use in explaining the large fluctuations in currents.
Simultaneous data in 1989 from four stations extending from the near-equatorial station at Padang at 1°S to Benoa in the Lombok Strait (2000 km downcoast) clearly show the persistent propagation of low-frequency waves of 20- to 40-cm range along this coast.
We speculate that farther eastward progression of these waves to the Timor Passage of Ombai Strait will further modulate the throughflow.

This has lead to ambiguity of the mean and variable nature of the ITF, and of the transformation of the thermohaline and transport profiles within the interior seas.
The INSTANT program, involving contributions of 6 countries (USA, France, Netherlands, Australia, Indonesia, Japan), will finally measure in a coordinated fashion the ITF in the key throughflow passages (Makassar Strait, Lifamatola Passage, Lombok Strait, Ombai Strait and Timor Passage) simultaneously.
The measurements span a 3 year period beginning in August 2003.
