The town of Omeo, which faced an extreme threat during much of the afternoon, with flames licking at the edge of the town at one stage, was protected.
Victoria's two main fires, the Pinnabar fires south of Corryong and the Bogong fires, crept closer yesterday and are still threatening to merge.
The executive officer of Omeo District Hospital, Pauline Bommer, said a handful of people had been brought in after getting smoke or ash in their eyes, but otherwise there were no serious injuries.

Omeo is an old goldmining town in the mountain country 97 km north of Bruthen and 400 km north-east of Melbourne via the Princes and Omeo Highways.
Land settlement began in 1870 and Omeo was declared a municipality in 1872.
In the main street of Omeo is the A.M. Pearson Historical Park which contains the original courthouse (1865) and its Romanesque successor (1892), designed by A.J. MacDonald, who was also responsible for the neo-Gothic post office at South Yarra in Melbourne and the courthouse in Bairnsdale.
