Omi Hachiman that extends itself at the foot of Mt. Hachiman-yama in the central part of Shiga is a castle town of Hachiman-yama Castle built in 1585 on the eastern shore of the largest lake in Japan, Lake Biwa-ko, and is a base town for Omi shonin, or Omi merchants.
The streets with a stretch of fl mortar and lattice windows, as well as Hachiman-bori area that was the hub of marine transportation, are designated as a national important preservation districts for groups of historic building.
Until the mid 19th century the town of Omi Hachiman was divided by Hachiman-bori, north of which was a residential area for the warriors and south for the townsfolk.

Although Issa was born and lived in Nagano about two centuries ago, he is still world-renowned for his haiku, poems of three verses with five, seven, and then five syllables.
In honor of the Nagano Games, residents of Nagano Prefecture have written haiku to greet Olympic visitors through a program called "One Haiku for the Olympics," sponsored by the Nagano Prefecture International Relations Department, the Haiku Poets' Association of Nagano Prefecture, and ANPIE (Association of Nagano Prefecture for International Exchange).

Nagano Prefecture is home to some great skiing - in fact, there is so much to choose from, it can be impossible to decide where to go.
Particularly useful to inhabitants of Nagano City is the fact that Iizuna Resort has night skiing all week, a very good value at 1800 yen for 5 hours' skiing (5-10 p.m., weather permitting).
There is also a bus from Nagano (takes 45-60 minutes), or you can take the JR Naoetsu line from Nagano to Mure Village (20 minutes), and then a bus from Mure.
