Ommadawn - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ommadawn is a record album written and mostly performed by Mike Oldfield.
The word ommadawn appears to be related to the Irish word amadán meaning "fool".
A slightly remixed version of "Ommadawn" was released on Boxed a year later.

 Ommadawn Essay by Michael Arnold
OMMADAWN is a matured sequel to HERGEST RIDGE.
In rearranging OMMADAWN we have dragged it from its grave for a re-examination.
OMMADAWN may be but a simple excursion into a novel form, of Assimilationism; even so it does suggest a path of considerable potential.

 Ommadawn
The full score of Ommadawn is a facsimile of the conductor's copy, which, although not set out in proper classical format, does score for all parts of the ensemble.
OMMADAWN far surpasses this earlier work: it is a tighter composition which, through a series of episodes based on related thematic materials, takes us on a journey through Oldfield's troubled psyche.
To Oldfield, OMMADAWN was a vent for his anger at the psychological trauma he had experienced as a child in a dysfunctional family, and this is evident in the music as euphoric climax gives way to frenzy and as textural and rhythmic density pull the listener on to the final bar.

Ground and Sky review - Mike Oldfield - Ommadawn
Side One of Ommadawn is centered by a main theme that is intriguing for its cultural polymorphism.
Ommadawn does contain trademarks in Oldfield's music in general that I have a hard time assimilating.
On Ommadawn, this huge variety of instruments - acoustic and electric guitar, recorders, bass, and various winds are most prominent - creates a sound that is simultaneous serious and upbeat.

MIKE OLDFIELD Ommadawn reviews and MP3
As a child I was introduced to the final section of 'Ommadawn (Part Two)', the edit usually referred to as 'On Horseback', and while oblivious to the rest of the music that precedes it I found the song simply magical...
Ommadawn is celtic (good ole Paddy Moloney's here, you know), progressive, ethnic, Ommadawn has pathos and an incredible guitar solo in the middle of Side One.
I rate 'Ommadawn' excellent (half of it is indeed a masterpiece) and recommend it to those who enjoy, and also those who would appreciate an introduction to, the music of Mike Oldfield.

Beyond the Ridge: Portrait of a Genius (Ommadawn Review)
In 'Ommadawn', Mike Oldfield has developed the concept of using studio techniques to create a quasi-symphonic structure for popular music to a point where it now really works.
Classical music relies upon development and variation for building up musical interest, but Mike Oldfield has taken the system of a basic harmonic chord progression, which is the basis of all improvisation in jazz and rock, and built his structures upon it.
'Ommadawn' can be pared to an even simpler melodic expression, namely the melody which opens side one and is repeated four times in the first minute.

Nevertheless 'Ommadawn' is an excellent album to those who want to get to know Mike's music and to a fan to listen to every once in a while, but definitely not a masterpiece.
The first time I listened to 'Ommadawn' I was a little sceptic in the beginning of it.
On 'Ommadawn' Mike also gives credit to the chlidren who are listening to the final song with their hands on their hearts.

With OMMADAWN, he sealed his place in music legend, and perhaps unwittingly discovered a new audience by composing a suite of melodies with immense appeal to children.
Released in 1975, the haunting Ommadawn is an excellent recording and the last of the trilogy that featured album-length works including Tubular Bells (1973) and Hergest Ridge (1974).
Mike Oldfield is quite the multi-instrumentalist and on Ommadawn plays everything from acoustic/electric guitar, to bass, to (tons of) synthesizers (amongst other instruments), including a brief vocal passage on Ommadawn Part Two (he sings quite well).

Mike Oldfield : Ommadawn - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Although it features the beautiful recorder of Leslie Penny and the Chieftains' Paddy Maloney playing the uilean pipe, Ommadawn didn't gain Mike Oldfield the success he was looking for.
The most pleasing attribute of Ommadawn is its incorporation of both African and Irish music in its symphonic rock & roll mainframe.
Boosted by a hearty amount of different horns, piano, cello, trumpet, and synthesizer, the album has its moments of rising action, but the whole of Ommadawn fails to keep its lovely segments around long enough, and there are some rather lengthy instances that include bland runs of unvaried music.

Oldfield, Mike - Ommadawn - Groove Unlimited   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
With his first release, Tubular Bells, Mike Oldfield created a genre that can best be termed "symphonic folk-rock." Ommadawn, his third album, continued in a similar though somewhat more ambitious and less portentous vein.
"Ommadawn" marks the third major release from OLDFIELD and in my opinion conveys his deepest musical abilities ever.
"Ommadawn" is really a combination of the best elements from both "Tubular Bells" and "Hergest Ridge".

Manticornio · Rock Progresivo · Mike OLDFIELD / Ommadawn

Oldfield employed the same format he had used on his previous two albums, with both sides of the album comprising a lengthy instrumental collage.
