Greek Fun   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
From Mavili Square and Michalakopoulou Street to Kalogiron Square in Glyfada and the Pedion tou Areos, Athenian canteens are the last stop for hundreds of people before ending their night on the town.
Omonoia Square was a paved square with four marble kiosks, which made it glamorous, vibrant and interesting.
Today, on the pavements around the square there are twenty-two kiosks, which are the biggest attraction on a Saturday night when the newsstands are full of fresh news from the Sunday newspapers and the lifestyle frenzy of Greek and foreign magazines.

Diagonally opposite the library is the Arsakeio where the Council of State is housed.
It is one of the three large streets that were laid out in the town-plan of 1832 and today is one of the main arteries in the town.
Near Omonoia are the National Theater and the Municipal Gallery.

Talk:Athens - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Currently Athens displays the Omonoia Square as the first photo, and the Parthenon of Acropolis is included later in the page.
It is true that few Athenians care about the Parthenon today, IMO, and the "character" of the city has changed a lot from the past (now it is a fast-pacing city, while in the past it was a more peaceful and quiet place).
Most (all) foreign students that I know have the same idea with me. So I think it's better to show what is beautiful in a city, and not places like Omonoia which are considered as noisy etc by many people, especially those who have the chance/fortune to live in the peaceful and quiet suburban areas.

 How to reach Patras
The airport is connected with the centre of Athens, Syntagma Square with busses, No 095 which run every few minutes all 24 hours and it takes about 50 minutes to reach Syntagma Square.
The cost of the ticket for this bus, which connects the airport with the centre of Athens is 2.90 euro and you can use it for 24 hours (from the moment you cancel it) on all public city transportation (buses, tram, train, metro).
Once in Omonoia square you should go on foot (about 10 minutes) to the bus station of buses number 051, which leave from Menandrou and Zinonos Street and go to “KTEL Peloponnisou (Kifissos station)” (the bus terminal is inside the coach station).

Syntagma Square is separated into the upper part, with the Parliament building, and the lower part, where Ermou Street, the city's most commercial pedestrian thoroughfare, begins.
The section between Panepistimiou Street and Omonoia Square is not very interesting and is lined with office buildings and commercial enterprises, including a Metropolis record store right at the turn Panepistimiou makes before ending at Omonoia.
As soon as you reach the Square, walk to your left, pass Stadiou Street, which runs back up to Syntagma, and turn left again at the next street, Athinas. This is one of the most commercial streets in the city, and it tends to attract more low income people and many immigrants.

Tens of thousands of Greeks assembled on Omonoia square less than an hour after the match was over.
Once the goal went in, champagne bottles were tossed into the air and some ecstatic fans kissed the asphalt.
In a first for Greece, municipalities across the country had put up giant screens in central squares, some of them even on beaches, so people could watch the match taking place in Porto.

Some Thoughts on Greek Architectural Competitions
In a square constantly and fully exposed to the sun, the choice of covering it with cement from end to end shows that environmental / weather parameters were not taken into account at all.
Looking at the pictures I realised one more thing: The "mound" of cement that has been raised on the square manages to ruin the very nice view that had been created through the restoration of the buildings around the square, hiding significant parts of them.
I believe that the new scheme for the Omonoia square in Athens is a tangible example of how paper-architecture-projects cannot always be successfully translated into ''eloquent buildings'', which will be able to convey the initial architectural concept efficiently.

Overall impression: The 2004 guys have done a great job improving the city’s image but they should have been even more drastic in some cases “Entweder renovieren Sie das Gebäude oder wird es von der WEHRMACHT gleichgemacht werden!;) “…..oh well the city centre still looks a lot better than it did say, 10 years ago.

Temple of Olympia - Pictures of Greece - Athens
We stayed at the Hotel La Mirage in Omonoia Square, an area of Athens that was later revealed as being virtually the centre of the Red Light District of town.
On the northern edge of the Plaka area is Mitropoleos Square, which is occupied by a large church/cathedral (I forget which) with a mural above the entrance.
The square is unfortunately given a 'building site' look by the vast amounts of scaffolding and fenced-off areas, as you can see.
