The Omotic languages are Afro-Asiatic languages spoken in northeastern Africa.
The Ge'ez alphabet is used to write such Omotic languages as are written.
They should not be confused with the unrelated Omotik language, a nearly extinct Nilotic language of Tanzania with a similar name.

The relatively limited area in which they live, the diversity of their languages, and other linguistic considerations suggest that the ancestors of the speakers of Omotic languages have been in place for many millennia.
Omotic speakers have been influenced linguistically and otherwise by Nilo-Saharan groups to the west and by East Cushitic groups surrounding them.
Except for the Kefa--long influenced by Orthodox Christianity--and a small number of Muslims, Omotic speakers have retained their indigenous religious systems, although a few have been influenced by European missionaries.

Many people regard the Ongota language as Omotic, but its classification within the family remains controversial, partly for lack of data.
Tonal languages appear in the Omotic, Chadic, and South and East Cushitic branches of Afro-Asiatic, according to Ehret (1996).
In 1969 Harold Fleming proposed the recognition of Omotic as a fifth branch, rather than (as previously believed) a subgroup of Cushitic, and this has met with general acceptance.

These populations spoke languages that belong to the Afro-Asiatic super-language family, a group of related languages that includes Omotic, Cushitic, and Semitic, all of which are found in Ethiopia today.
The first language to separate seems to have been Omotic, at a date sometime after 13,000 B.C. Omotic speakers moved southward into the central and southwestern highlands of Ethiopia, followed at some subsequent time by Cushitic speakers, who settled in territories in the northern Horn of Africa, including the northern highlands of Ethiopia.
Omotic also spawned a large number of languages, Welamo (often called Wolayta) and Gemu-Gofa being among the most widely spoken of them, but Omotic speakers would remain outside the main zone of ethnic interaction in Ethiopia until the late nineteenth century.

In these languages, the distinction between declaratives and interrogatives (of both polar and content-question-word types) is obligatorily marked on the verb through the use of different sets of morphemes which vary according to the person, number and gender of the subject.
We plan to examine details of these unusual phenomena in all branches of the Omotic language family and to explore their theoretical relevance to discussions in general linguistics, particularly on universals and variation in languages.
Omotic as a whole represents close to thirty minority languages most of which have not been documented.

The Ethiopian languages are divided into four major language groups.These are Semitic, Cushitic, Omotic, and Nilo-Saharan.
The Omotic languages are predominantly spoken between the Lakes of southern Rift Valley and the Omo River.
