Omphalos (theology) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The idea has seen some revival in the twentieth century by some modern creationists, who have extended the argument to light that appears to originate in far-off stars and galaxies, although many other creationists reject this explanation[1] (and also believe that Adam and Eve had no navels[2]).
There is no logical impossibility in the hypothesis that the world sprang into being five minutes ago, exactly as it then was, with a population that "remembered" a wholly unreal past.
Since the hypothesis is based on the idea that apparent age is an illusion, it is perfectly reasonable to suggest that world was created mere minutes ago.

Since the hypothesis is based on the idea that apparent age is an illusion, it is a consistent extension to then suggest that the world could have been created as recently as minutes ago.
He presented it not as an hypothesis but as a law or logical necessity: any created organism must be "from the first marked with the records of a previous being".

A New Approach to Earth History » The created world no longer exists
Omphalos was the creationist position pushed to its extreme.
If the only choice was between believing that God had so created the Earth 6,000 years ago as to make it look older than it was and believing that it really was older, churchmen were bound to join the rest of educated society in preferring the latter.
In itself such a hypothesis might not be unreasonable, especially if one were to admit that the cause of accelerated decay was unknown and needed to be investigated.

," the hypothesis that we were all created, complete with memories of unreal events, on Thursday morning of last week, and (2) that it must be rejected because "God can't lie" and a false history must be taken as evidence that he did lie.
But Gosse's arguments go well beyond Russell's hypothesis, and he argues well that any fiat creation, even by God, must necessarily include unreal history.
Gosse's thesis is not, of course, "scientific." While it may be true, it is not testable, nor does it suggest future research projects.

The problem of the age of the earth was a vexed one for much of the 19th century.
Regardless of whether one believed James Ussher's date of 4004 BC to be the true date of Earth's origin, no biblically reconstructed date for the creation of the earth was long enough to be anything but the smallest fraction of the time that was implied by geology or, later, zoology.
His life from a few years before the publication of Omphalos to his death is recorded to some extent in Father and Son (1907), written by his son -- Sir Edmund William Gosse, who became a famous biographer in the late Victorian and early Edwardian period.

Omphalos -- why the YECs cannot be refuted - TheologyWeb Campus
Omphalos is the classical example of an utterly untestable notion, for the world will look exactly the same in all its intricate detail whether fossils and strata are prochronic or products of an extended history.
When we realize that Omphalos must be rejected for this methodological absurdity, not for any demonstrated factual inaccuracy, then we will understand science as a way of knowing, and Omphalos will serve its purpose as an intellectual foil or prod.
It seems that Omphalos (or as I like to refer to it affectionately as "Adam's Bellybutton") would be the most logical view for the YEC.

Not enough people appreciate that science is generally a contrastive activity - one hypothesis (e.g., the earth is millions of years old) can be strongly favoured over another (the earth is 6,000 years old) even if it is predicitvely equivalent to some third, skeptical Russellian scenario.
