Omusati is the homeland region of Samuel Nujoma, the first president of Namibia.

The current project to identify and monitor elephants in the Kunene and Omusati regions of Namibia is an extension of the MET policy related to the consumptive utilisation of resources, and ongoing CBNRM initiatives.
The total of GPS monitored elephants in the Kunene and Omusati Region is now ten individuals, though difficulties have now been experienced with three of the collars: two had ceased to function by June 2006, while the other collar gives off only a sporadic signal.
Studies have commenced in the Omusati, but due to the nature of the environment and the nervousness of the elephant herds' identification and monitoring of the elephant herds has been difficult, with few positive identifications being made.

Ogongo Agricultural College, located in Omusati region, in northern Namibia, was first opened in February 1973 to serve the needs of the then Administration of Owambos to train its young population in agriculture.

It becomes even more complex when it is said most of the people who saw it fit to end their lives left suicide notes giving HIV and Aids as the reason why they had decided to die.
While suicide statistics for other regions in Namibia are not available, the situation in Omusati is a possible indicator of what it is like in other areas where HIV/AIDS patients choose suicide when their pain exceeds their resources for coping with the situation.

The region that fares second most poorly is Kavango where up to 50 percent of those interviewed said they did not receive adequate and balanced meals.
Omusati is third at 56 percent and Omaheke fourth with 48 percent of the respondents complaining.
Another interesting revelation that came out in the report is the high incidence of alcohol consumption among senior citizens, especially in the Kavango, Ohangwena and Omusati regions.

Ruacana Councillor, Honourable Cornelius Lazarus, said a syndicate, comprising young Namibian and Angolan men, is involved in stealing cattle in the region.
Omusati Governor, Honourable Sacky Kayone, has expressed concern over the increase in incidents of stock theft in the region at the official opening of the Okahao Police Station by President Sam Nujoma last month.
He added that the police are aware of high incidents of stock theft in the constituency but investigations were still continuing.

Omusati Regional Officer, Gabes Shivolo, confirmed yesterday that plans are underway for an airport at Outapi, with construction work to start as soon as a feasibility and environmental impact study is completed.
Asked why Omusati needed three airports, Shivolo said it was the most populous region in Namibia.
When President Nujoma announced the construction of an airport at Okahao earlier this year, he said Okahao was in the middle of Omusati and an airport there would help business people transport their goods in and out of the region.

Speaking at the graduation of Omusati Women's Voice trainees at the Omahenene Research Station this week, De Klerk told the gathering that WAD is negotiating the development aid with Nolidep which operates under the Ministry of Agriculture.
The N$750 000 will be used to develop facilities for Omusati Women's Voice at the Omahenene Training Centre, such as a needlework room, a training hall, improved overnight facilities for students receiving training, and an ablution bloc.
The gathering was attended by WAD members from the Omusati, Hardap, and Otjozondjupa regions as well as special guests from Zimbabwe.

 Namibia: AIDS Drain Pension Money   
The neglect of elderly people, who bear the brunt of HIV/AIDS, places their sustainability under threat, a study on HIV/AIDS and its implications on the elderly in the Omusati Region has found.
With the death of their household members having drastically reduced household remittances, they rely on their pension payouts, which are also diverted into paying the costs incurred by caring for orphans and the sick and dying family members, thus reducing the time they invest in cultivating crops.
The research was prompted by the relative neglect of the elderly in development research, policy and practice.

Amongst the visited councilors, those who were met and talked to were 5 from Omusati region, 5 from Oshikoto region, one from Ohangwena region.
The TCE program was also presented to regional AIDS coordinators in Oshana, Omusati, Ohangwena and Oshikoto regions who were also very instrumental in informing the general community and all the staff in their structures at different levels.
Apart from the Regional Health Directors, TCE leadership met Health Personnel from Outapi hospital, the Principal Medical Officer, Matron and the Doctor who were also very optimistic that the coming of TCE would go a long way in liberating the community from the HIV/AIDS scourge.

THE Omusati regional team won the first ever Windhoek Lager Four O Regions Soccer Championships which took place at Tsandi Independence Stadium in the Omusati region over the weekend.
The chairman of the Omusati region's Onawa Football League, Simon Shileka, expressed his satisfaction at the end of the tournament.

Andowa, who is the regional councillor for the Anamulenge Constituency told fellow MPs in the National Council on Wednesday that the Omusati region is one of the hardest hit by HIV and AIDS.

In three regions, namely Omusati, Oshana and Oshi-koto, which are part of the six regions in which the 111 000 OVC will receive the food assistance, one in every 10 children relies on one parent.
The ministry will coordinate the distribution of food to the Oshikoto, Ohangwena, Omusati, Oshana, Kavango and Caprivi regions until the end of the 2007/8 financial year, when the ministry is able to phase as many orphans as possible into the Grant Payment System.

 News: Southern Africa Humanitarian Crisis, Namibia: Food security improves
The latest Food Security Bulletin produced by the Early Warning and Food Information Unit of the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry says due to the substantial rainfall experienced during the past crop season, crop production forecast at the end of May 2006 indicates an improvement in the harvest.
It also indicates that the household food sufficiency, an indication of a number of months the harvest will sustain an average household in each region, only exists in two regions, namely Omusati and Oshikoto.
The analysis of the early warning unit says that while the cereal harvests in Caprivi, Ohangwena and Oshana regions will sustain the households halfway, Kavango is of great concern because the cereal harvest may only last five months from July to November this year.
