Avery Island is a salt dome located in Iberia Parish, Louisiana, United States, about three miles (5 km) inland from Vermilion Bay, which in turn opens onto the Gulf of Mexico.
The island was formerly known as Petite Anse Island.
Avery island is one of five salt dome islands that rise above the flat Louisiana Gulf coast.

Avery Island was recommissioned on 31 July 1945 at the New York Navy Yard; conducted trial runs in Long Island Sound and shakedown training in Chesapeake Bay; and underwent a yard availability at Norfolk, Va. With her training period complete, Avery Island reported on 6 September to Service Force, Atlantic Fleet, for duty.

The five Louisiana islands, arched up by rising salt stocks, are the only large topographic hills in the swamp, marsh and coastal plains of southern Louisiana -- and were a conscript habitation for prehistoric Indians and later European settlers.
Tropical gardens have been cultivated on Jefferson and Avery islands, and the latter is home to the world-famous Tabasco® sauce and also houses a rare-bird sanctuary and exotic tropical plants.
Petroleum wells on the west side of the island are drilled from barges in canals; those on the east from land rigs.

It was on Avery Island, where salt and pepper meet, that Edward A. McIlhenny, (pronounced "mackle hen e") son of Tabasco sauce inventor Edmund McIlhenny, helped save the snowy egret from extinction.
Seeds grown on the Island today are nurtured for next year's crop and exported to Central and South America where Tabasco peppers are cultivated and harvested at the peak of their ripeness.
The newly harvested peppers are mashed at the factory with a little Avery Island salt (supposedly part of the secret of the unique flavor of Tabasco; hence the saying 'where salt meets pepper.') The mash ferments and ages for three years in white oak barrels.
