In Every Street - 18 March 2006 - New Scientist
One day my boss took me on a visit to Every Street, at that time a rather depressed and deserted part of industrial Manchester (Feedback, 25 February).
He said that one of the city councillors had insisted it should be erected there, so that he could claim in his next election address that "due to my efforts there is now a public toilet in Every Street in Manchester".
"Every" was the family name of the residents of the local hall, and the family's arms were depicted on the sign.

  Street Peddling
Street peddling was largely the occupation of immigrant Jewish, Italian, and Greek populations who settled in the city's Near West Side in the 1870s through the early 1900s.
The most colorful street peddlers have often been the musicians, and Chicago is noted for its blues traditions among street musicians.
Although street peddling had a continued presence in Chicago in the twentieth century, its florescence was affected by changing marketing habits, social patterns, and public policy.

Canal Street (Manhattan) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Canal Street is a major street in New York City, crossing lower Manhattan to join New Jersey in the west (via the Holland Tunnel I-78) to Brooklyn in the east (via the Manhattan Bridge).
Canal Street takes its name from a literal canal that was dug in the early 1800s to drain the contaminated and disease-ridden Collect Pond into the Hudson River.
The historic townhouses and newer tenements that had been built along Canal Street quickly fell into disrepair, and the eastern stretch of Canal Street came within the ambit of the notorious Five Points slum as property values and living conditions plummeted.

Rolling Stone : On Every Street : Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
In the manner of last year's Notting Hillbillies and Knopfler's other side projects, On Every Street explores Knopfler's affinity with Nashville in particular and with an idealized version of the musical South in general, with session steel player Paul Franklin emerging as his major musical foil.
At more than seven minutes, "The Planet of New Orleans" was apparently designed as the album's centerpiece, but it sounds like a leftover from one of Knopfler's film sound-tracks, its evocation of "mojo root" incongruous, given a musical backdrop that suggests the aural equivalent of designer fashion.
As a whole, On Every Street reconfirms that Knopfler is an impeccable guitarist, a musician of exquisite taste – but some of it shows why impeccability in rock is often a minor virtue and tastefulness a smooth path to tedium.

Walking Every Street in Manhattan - Wired New York Forum
That was two Sundays ago, and Smith, to commemorate the occasion, invited a handful of friends to watch him walk his last untravelled block—Thirty-third Street between Fifth Avenue and Broadway, at the foot of the Empire State Building.
Before beginning this project, he explained, he had walked the length of Broadway—the full length of Broadway, from Yonkers to the Battery—and snapped a photograph at every block along the way.
Before completing the project, Smith made a final, ceremonial exception to the rules, and, as though passing the torch, arranged to walk the streets of upper Inwood with an apprentice, Mike Epstein.
