Fatboy Slim On The Floor At The Boutique
On The Floor At The Boutique is the only official new release from Fatboy Slim between now and his studio follow up which he is working on right now at his House of Love studio in Brighton, England.
The Boutique was started by Skint Records honcho Damien Harris, and club promoter Gareth Hansome, as a place where they could hear house, hip-hop, rock and everything else in between all being played by Norman Cook.
The North American version of On The Floor At The Boutique includes a previously unavailable video for "Build It Up, Tear It Down" that shows the last ever night at the Concorde, where the Boutique was originally thrown.

Later in '98, Cook masterminded On The Floor At The Boutique, the first recorded DJ set from The Boutique.
Culled from the many sets he DJ'ed at the Big Beat Boutique weekly party, On The Floor At The Boutique is a time-capsule that relives the epicenter of Norman Cook's resident DJ gigs and Skint's indelible influence on the music scene in the UK's hippest town.
As the liner notes indicate, the Boutique arose out of Skint and Cook's desire to have parties that mixed house, hip-hop, indie, funk, and anything else with massive beats, emphasizing F U N in big capital letters.

Fatboy Slim: On the Floor at the Boutique: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
So, he decided to release a compilation of tracks in a DJ mix called On the Floor at the Boutique-- he felt that he could not name the album Claire's Boutique, because he might run into legal problems with the Beastie Boys-- and it was indeed an interesting moment in Fatboy Slim history.
On the Floor at the Boutique compiled 19 songs, released together in a non-stop continuous mix.
Ultimately, Boutique did serve as a worthy document of the entire big beat genre, and fans of the style found great pleasure in Fatboy's choice of tracks and "mad mixing skillz." In Pitchfork, the record drew comparisons to earlier big beat mixes, especially Bentley Rhythm Ace's superior two-disc installment of the UK-only FSUK compilation series.

The next, and longest (75%) section of the CD is a well-paced flow of alterna-techno dance floor mixes.
The tracks are mainly cutting-edge unknowns with a few bigger names such as Prodigy and The Jungle Brothers mixed in (the remix of the JB's "Black is Black" is a real high point on the disk.) This section reaches a few nice crescendos and certainly comprises the real meat of this CD.

On the Floor at the Boutique is a stellar mix album, but for most occasions, experiencing the live thing and dancing at a club will yield more favorable results.

Released to celebrate the third birthday of the world-renown dance club known as "The Boutique," On The Floor bristles with funkified beats guaranteed to get the dullest of parties up and moving.
The Boutique has branches in Berlin, London, New York and Dublin and as regular DJs at these clubs, the Allstars are known to set the night on fire with sets that combine all the classic old-school hip-hoppers with the newest in big-beat electronica.
There is hardly a moment during On The Floor where the hallucinogenic energy lets up and, by the end, the Allstars will have you craving more.

But the DJ, an Olympia, Washington native, is hardly just a record player; his liberal use of EQ and effects tweakings and hand acrobat abilities gracefully dominate the recording to eke the valleys of tension and release between the grooves.
On the Floor at the Boutique, however, mixed by the Lo-Fidelity AllStars is an altogether more adventurous but flawed mix of an entirely different style, combining vintage rap cuts with early big beat dance-rockers and mutated gospel.

One of his biggest hits, "The Rockafeller Skank," makes an appearance, but the funk-soul brother also gets down on the educational-historical tip, gleefully tripping over classic hip-hop break beats ("Apache," by Michael Viner's Incredible Bongo Band) and technotrance (Aldo Bender's "Acid Enlightenment") like a smiley-faced sonic shaman.
Electronica-purist player haters might sniff at Fatboy's pump-up-the-volume populism, but the genre-defying eclecticism and ear for big hooks on display here are undeniable.
On the Floor at the Boutique proves once and for all that, despite his commercial success, when Fatboy Slim rocks the wheels of steel, he's still mad, bad and dangerous to know.

Yet under his nom de plume of Midfield General, Skint label owner and musician Damian Harris takes the "who gives a toss" approach to create a moody, antsy collection of breaks, beats, and a steadfast refusal to die.
One of the first warning signs of a quality comeback in the world of big beat was most assuredly Harris' own On the Floor at the Boutique, Vol.
Which all helps make Generalisation a follow-up uppercut to Harris' On the Floor at the Boutique comeback punch.
