Metal-Rules.com: Pre-listening session at Finnvox Studio for Nightwish new album "Once"
Our new stuff on ONCE mostly is based on very riff-laden song structures as well as we have never used this many classical orchestra parts for our songs as we did with the songs for ONCE.
Making ONCE has been really hard task to make; we have been spending time to make this album longer than with any of our other albums, but I still think that the experience we have got out of this all has also been the most rewarding to us all in all.
On the other hand, many also told me afterwards that as the sound on ONCE is so massive and monumental, they need to give a few extra spins to it in order to get it better absorbed into their minds and enjoy the album at fullest.

The next Nightwish release is expected for early 2007, though without the vocals of Tarja, who was asked to leave the band in October 2005.

 PyroMusic.net - Review of: Nightwish - Once
Nightwish’s have always been a little too inconsistent for me. Furthermore, their previous discs seemed to hint of a band that was unsure of what they wanted to be – Metal or classical pop.
I guess what I am trying to point out is that, finally, Nightwish have found a happy medium between their two styles and have been able to mesh the two together without sounding forced or contrived.
Album length aside, it is clear that Nightwish have gone for the throat with ‘Once’.

Since the last time I saw the band in Malmö, I have listened a lot more to the older Nightwish albums and one thing that comes to mind every time I listen to them is that Tarja has a tendency to sound monotonous.
The main focus was on the new album ONCE which they have taken most of the songs from.

The album was released in Europe just this past June and has already gone gold in Germany (selling well over 100,000 copies) and double-platinum in their native Finland (over 60,000 copies sold).
"Once" does carry on with much of the same operatic vocals, amazing guitar riffs/solos, thunderous double-kick pounding and almost everything else you would expect to hear from NIGHTWISH, but the band take it one giant step further with the introduction of a number of elements not heard on a NIGHTWISH album before.
For example, the band incorporated the use of chants, oration and flutes on one track and even hired an entire orchestra (under the direction of Pip Williams and conductor James Shearman), which happens to be the exact same orchestra that was utilized for the score in the "Lord Of The Rings" trilogy.

The London Session Orchestra, that contributes bountifully (and expensively) to this album, is the equivalent of, say, Lucasfilm's FX-unit Industrial Light and Magic, making skyscrapers crumble and dinosaurs move so naturally that you hardly notice the lack of a proper dramatic structure.
But perhaps my judgment is tainted by the awful promotion copy of the album where parts of the songs are faded to allow a gentleman to read the titles of the songs.
