Genetics and Molecular Biology - Cytogenetics and cytotaxonomy of some Brazilian species of Cymbidioid orchids   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
When the subtribe Oncidiinae is considered as a whole, the variation of chromosome numbers seems very similar to that of the genus Oncidium (Figure 6), with the numbers n = 21 and n = 28 prevailing, suggesting that the other genera have a common ancestor with Oncidium.
Considering the polyploid series observed in Oncidium and Oncidiinae in general, it is reasonable to suppose that x = 7 would be the primary base number of the subtribe, as suggested by Charanasri and Kamemoto (1975).
Morphologically, Stanhopeinae and Lycastinae share in common the presence of plicate leaves and elaborated pollination mechanisms (van der Pijl and Dodson, 1966), whereas Oncidiinae and Ornithocephalinae have in common the absence of "sunken glandular trichomes", found in Maxillariinae, Lycastinae and Stanhopeinae (Toscano de Brito, 1998).

Subtribe Oncidiinae: We increased sampling in the Oncidiinae to 634 species representing 84 generic concepts for one region (ITS) and 250 species for additional plastid regions (matK, trnL-F), and we have added the atpB-rbcL intergenic spacer region for 126 species.
We are currently working on manuscripts on the Brazilian "Oncidium" clade, the genus Tolumnia and groups which have been segregated from it, and the genus Telipogon and its relatives.
Molecular systematics of Telipogon (Orchidaceae: Oncidiinae) and its allies: nuclear and plastid dna sequence data.

Care must be taken when doing this, however, that the increased light is not too great or injury to the leaves will result.
Oncidiinae intergeneric hybrids should be kept somewhat moist.
Never allow them to dry out completely, but be sure to provide for excellent drainage, as soggy or waterlogged conditions are not conducive to healthy growth.

GROWING THE NEW ONCIDIINAE INTERGENERIC HYBRIDS
For example, Oncidium onustum occurs at sea level at the Equator in South America, often in full light and on fence posts, while Odontoglossum crispum is found at 9,000+ feet in the Andes mountains where it is continually cool and moist.
What follows then are recommendations for culture of the "Temperature Tolerant" oncidiinae which we have created at Everglades Orchids.
Oncidiinae intergeneric hybrids should generally be kept somewhat moist.

"Molecular and morphological systematics of the subtribe Oncidiinae (Orchidaceae)." $25,000.
Phylogenetics as a prelude to a revised classification of Oncidium and related genera." This proposal is to sample ±100 taxa currently classified in Oncidium, Odontoglossum and several generic segregates for the plastid regions matK, trnL-F, and the atpß-rbcL intergenic spacer region, to complement the nuclear ITS region already completed.
Molecular systematics of the Oncidiinae based on evidence from four DNA sequence regions: expanded circumscriptions of Cyrtochilum, Erycina, Otoglossum, and Trichocentrum and a new genus (Orchidaceae).

The DNA data clearly show that these clades are embedded within the Oncidiinae, indicating that there has been an evolutionary increase in pollinium number within Oncidiinae from two to four.
The Oncidiinae is the subtribe that is suffering the most taxonomic changes.
Interestingly, in the Oncidiinae, we are discovering that vegetative features often provide better taxonomic characters at the generic level than do floral features.

We recognized six subtribes: Coeliopsidinae, Eriopsidinae, Maxillariinae (including Lycastinae and Bifrenariinae), Oncidiinae (including Pachyphyllinae, Ornithocephalinae, Telipogoninae, and Lockhartiinae), Stanhopeinae, and Zygopetalinae (including Cryptarrheninae, Dichaeinae, Huntleyinae, and Warreinae).
The relationships in subtribes in Oncidiinae and Zygopetalinae are also based on the combined ITS/matk/trnL-F analyses.
These cladograms are based on ITS, matK, or trnL-F data sets, or combinations of data sets, from the combined analysis of 96 taxa and extracted from Whitten, W. Williams, and M. Chase.

The polyphyletic evolution of oil secreting flowers among angiosperms and the pollination of orchids by oil collecting bees have been proposed to be successful evolutionary strategies.
We provide a major survey of oil components with over a hundred different major compounds for members of the Oncidiinae, a subtribe with the most diverse type of pollination systems found in the Orchidaceae.
The variability in oil chemistry found among different genera of orchids can be used to understand the exploitation of oil resources by oil collecting bees and could potentially explain the high degree of pollinator specificity for many tropical orchid species.

Foliar carbon isotopic composition (d13C) measurements and nocturnal acid accumulation measurements within this family show that CAM exhibits a bimodal distribution with the majority of species having d13C values around –28 ‰ diagnostic of C3 photosynthesis and weak CAM, and -15‰ diagnostic of strong CAM.
The primary objectives of our research are 1) to map the occurrence of both weak and strong CAM species upon a well-established phylogeny within the Oncidiinae, a subtribe within Orchidaceae.
This research is a collaborative effort among investigators at the University of Nevada, Reno, University of Florida, and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI).

The history of these intergeneric (more than one genus involved) combinations is quite long, going back to the first hybrids of Odontioda (Odontoglossum x Cochlioda), Vuylstekeara (Miltonia x Odontioda) and Odontonia (Miltonia x Odontoglossum), created by hybridizers in England and Europe in the early 1800s.
