Radiation oncologist - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A radiation oncologist is a doctor who specialises in the treatment of cancer patients, using radiation as the main modality of treatment as opposed to a medical oncologist who is a doctor who uses chemotherapy as the preferred modality of treatment.
Radiation oncologists not only work closely with other physicians such as surgeons, internal medicine subspecialists and medical oncologists, but they also rely on the expertise of medical physicists, dosimetrists, radiation therapists, nurses, and many other support staff.
Most radiation oncologists also pursue a fellowship after their residency, examples of which include brachytherapy, intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), gynecologic radiation oncology, and many others.

Respectful Insolence (a.k.a. "Orac Knows"): What is a surgical oncologist?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
A surgical oncologist is different from a medical oncologist or a radiation oncologist, with whom we are sometimes confused.
Radiation oncologists sometimes are the primary treatment for some cancers with or without chemotherapy (Hodgkin's lymphoma, anal cancer, for example), but most of the time they give adjuvant therapy after surgery, as in breast cancer and rectal cancer.
Surgical oncologists are more highly trained, but a lot of what a surgical oncologist learns and brings to the table can be learned outside of a fellowship through experience taking care of cancer patients, and many general surgeons have done so.

 What is a Gynecologic Oncologist?
Over the past two decades, research has shown that referral to a gynecologic oncologist is one of the top factors in increasing ovarian cancer survival rates, as well as decreasing rates of recurrence.
Women whose surgery was performed by a gynecologic oncologist had five-year survival rates after surgical treatment only, which parallel those rates found in studies of women utilizing radiation or chemotherapy in addition to their surgery.
The improved survival of women whose surgeries are performed by gynecologic oncologists is a result of their tendency to perform more aggressive surgical techniques, and consequently realize more optimal outcomes.

The oncologist will often spend about an hour with the patient just talking about the problem and what the most appropriate therapy is. If a patient needs radiotherapy, the radiation oncologist will plan that treatment.
Radiation oncologists use three-dimensional images to work out exactly where the tumor is and where the normal tissues are, so that doctors can give treatment that will not have too many side effects.
During radiation treatments, the oncologist will generally see the patients about once a week to make sure that they are okay, and to help manage any side effects they might have.

I’m sure many patients when asked who their oncologist was would love to reply with a smile “You know, I can’t remember his name.” Rather than complain, oncologists should consider this their highest honor.
Please forgive us though if we stand at the window of our office and watch new mothers carrying in their babies, or elderly couples helping each other down the entrance ramp, and sigh with the thought of that day when we will no longer be needed.
There is nothing more enjoyable for oncologists than to see old patients in the office, for unlike family physicians we don’t always get to watch our patients grow old.
