In the News (Fri 1 Jan 10)

  Ondioline
The Ondioline, which had a sound very similar to the clavioline, was invented in 1947 by Georges Jenny of France.
When brand new, the ondioline sold for the equivelent of U.S. The ondioline made it's huge debut in the United States in the Stanley Kubrick film "Spartacus," starring Kirk Douglas and released in 1960.
The ondioline was also made popular by French band Kilopop on "Skymen" (written by Geoff Goddard of "Telstar" fame) which made the French Top 10, and by Jean Jacques Perrey, an instrumental Moog enthusiast.

Perrey and Kingsley - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jenny was the inventor of the Ondioline, a vacuum tube-powered keyboard instrument that was a forerunner of today's synthesizers and was capable of creating an amazing variety of sounds.
Its keyboard featured a very unique feature: the keyboard was suspended on special springs that introduced a natural vibrato, if the player moved the keyboard from side to side with their playing hand.
The result was a beautiful, almost human-like vibrato that lent a wide range of expression to the Ondioline.

Another interesting series of recordings were the ones using the Ondioline (an electronic keyboard invented in the 40's by Georges Jenny recognisable for it's distinctive vibrato that was extensively used in sci-fi and terror movies.
Some of the most reputed musicians who played the Ondioline were Jean-Jacques Perrey and Marty Manning.
Other important electronic related works were the ones related with the creation of sound effects and samples -with artists like Jim Fassett, Michel Magne and Dean Elliott -.

I preferred the Ondioline, which on its small keyboard allowed one to produce new and original sounds as well as sounds from existing instruments such as the violin or flute.

Jenny was the inventor of a rudimentary form of synthesiser known as the Ondioline, a vacuum tube instrument that he first developed in 1938.
It was controlled by an eight-octave keyboard much like that of an organ or piano, and was capable of simulating conventional instrument sounds (such as violin or flute) which could be further nuanced with vibrato by horizontal movement of the player's fingers on the keyboard.
He perfected a two-handed performance style where the young Frenchman would block the chords of a piece with his left hand on the piano while sketching an ethereal melody with the Ondioline (or Pianoline as it was known) with his right hand.

Stereolab's music would not only spawn dozens of imitators, but the very stuff they drew inspiration from (Esquivel, Can, Moondog, Os Mutantes) was suddenly the starting point for any self-respecting hipster's record collection.
The album's centerpiece is, of course, the thrilling 18-plus minutes of "Jenny Ondioline" - less a song than a ride you will enjoy taking over and over and over as it pulses and surges along.
They changed directions a couple of times after releasing this gem before settling on a jazzier and less noisy sound, which is of course disappointing, if only from the standpoint that the sound is more one-dimensional these days.

If you can find it, there is a limited edition single for Jenny Ondioline that has a 3:51 edit of Jenny O and 3 rockin B-sides, most notably "French Disko", which later appeared in another version on Switched on Vol 2 on Drag City Records.
Much of this album focuses on white noise that builds up as songs continue on, rather than have a crescendo (some songs have great crescendos too, though).
Jenny Ondioline (part of which comes from the "Exploding Head Movie" b-side) is an 18 minute track comprised of likely no more than five chords--it is the buildup of white noise that keeps this song interesting, and it really is a great song.

"Jenny Ondioline" here too, although the fact that it appears to be so far in front is faintly unsettling.
groove, but Jenny Ondioline is one of the, if not the, most blatant, and while what they do with it is wonderful, maybe it's a shame to state that that is the most representative song.

Oscillons is not limited to featuring only the B-sides: such familiar A-sides as "Jenny Ondioline," "The Noise of Carpet," "Ping Pong," and "Cybele's Reverie" are here next to such non-LP cuts as "Fluorescences," as well as a host of B-sides, some of which were featured on the 1998 Switched On comp, Aluminum Tunes.
Nevertheless, it's hard to imagine that any fan who followed Stereolab with any regularity not having the great majority of this material, which surely is why the DVD was included with this set.

Some argue that the reason for the Ondes Martenot's success was that, unlike the theremin, it used a traditional keyboard layout, with a separate finger control for glissando and vibrato as well as keys to adjust the timbre.
A rival instrument to the institutionally powerful Ondes-Martenot, the Ondioline achieved a little popularity in cabaret and popular music - and it was possibly the first instrument capable of imitating the sound of other instruments.
Few working Ondiolines exist today, but one who has championed its cause is composer Jean-Jacques Perrey on his early albums with Gershon Kingsley like Kalaeidoscopic Vibrations and The In Sound From Way Out.

 AUTOBIOGRAPHY 1
At this point I did not know a lot about music-and still don't, never having studied music seriously except for a 2-month stay at the Conservatory at Amiens where I was kicked out because of a rule forbidding students to perform in public.
In Paris I had a true success with "Around the World in 80 Ways." I started out as opening attraction at theaters, but since I spoke English I went on to bigger European stages in Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, England, etc. Thus began an international career...
In 1956 in Paris, I had the good fortune of meeting with the great singer/composer Charles Trenet, who was very impressed by the magical new sounds of the Ondioline.

 Jean Jacques Perrey
Inspired by inventor Georges Jenny, Perrey became the greatest proponent of the Ondioline, exporting it to the U.S. and introducing its spacey sound to American pop.
His first album with Gershon Kingsley, The In Sound from Way Out, is one of the milestone albums of space age pop, and his last Vanguard album, Moog Indigo, is still sampled by DJs today.
A chance meeting with Jenny in 1952 introduced Perrey to the Ondioline, a tiny keyboard that could produce fascinating flute-like sounds full of vibrato.

It must have brought me some luck, because the next year I appeared at the Olympia Theater (the greatest musical hall in Paris) with Edith Piaf.

In his building, he had set up an experiemental recording studio completely equipped with everything I had ever dreamed of: tape recorders, various musical instruments, all the electronic keyboards existing at the time (Allen, RMI, Hammond, Martin, etc).

Still, throw on "Hallogallo" off Neu!'s debut, and just try to pretend the head-bobbing beat, rhythm, and chord changes, even the drum fills, aren't a mirror image of "Jenny Ondioline." Yup.
