Hiroshima is a traditional center of the Chugoku region and was the seat of the Mori clan until the Battle of Sekigahara.
On March 20, 2005, the towns of Ondo, Kurahashi, Kamagari from Aki District and the towns of Yasuura, Toyohama and Yutaka from Toyota District merged into the expanded city of Kure.
Hiroshima's main industries include automobiles (Mazda is headquartered in Hiroshima Prefecture) and shipbuilding (Kure was one of the main naval bases of the Imperial Japanese Navy and remains a major commercial yard).

Even though I thought that Hiroshima was a place that I should see, for some reason I couldn't bring myself to spending my last full day in Japan in another city, particularly one that an American bomb had once leveled.
When we reached the bottom, we turned onto a road that followed the coast to the harbor town of Ondo a the edge of Kure.
It was becoming rush hour and I watched a number of ferries (including one that was moving so fast it must have been a hydrofoil) come and go.

Highway 32 between Kure and Hiroshima was opened in 1938.

Last week I spotted a mudflat at Aki-Aga in Hiroshima prefecture so I checked the tide times and got up early and was there for 7.30 (20mins bus, 20mins wait 10mins train) just an hour after low water.
I set off to stroll down to Ondo Bridge to see what I could see.
I carried my new camera (10x optical zoom with tele adaptor) but find that the odd photo worth is out of size range for the gallery.
