		The essence of One False Move is that it's a great character study working within a tale which starts in one (predictable) vein then shifts to something entirely different.
		A surprising aspect, which only emerges near the end, is just how sad the characters are (in their own ways); it's easy to get quite emotional.

		Boobytrap is obviously a clever name for a band comprised entirely of attractive women, and it's almost a shame that this band wears that moniker; it functions as a distraction from their gimmick-free songs.
		The songwriting helps, too: midtempo pop gem "Over and Under" has enough pep to make you annoyingly bouncy, and "Someone to Blame"'s chorus is almost effortlessly catchy -- proof that sometimes an entire song can be built on nothing but a solid hook.

		Directed by Carl Franklin and co-written by Thornton and Tom Epperson, One False Move begins as a promising suspense-thriller, but soon gives way to slow-burn drama as the secrets and lies of the leading characters are gradually uncovered.
		Paxton is excellent as the unsophisticated backwater cop who will do anything to get that one big arrest, and Williams, who finds herself caught between Paxton and her cohorts, is also compelling.

		In the middle of the film there is a scene of a highway patrolman pulling over a carload of suspects that could be a training film at any police academy.

		Despite the arrogance of the LAPD agents sent to Arkansas to collar the crooks, it is down-home Dixon who puts the final bloody showdown into motion (the fact that the thieves have been falling out throughout the film doesn't hurt things either).
		Carl Franklin knows where he's going in every frenetic frame of One False Move, and his movie was one of the most acclaimed independent releases of 1991.
