For a man renowned for his sartorial elegance and the most prudently maintained facial hair in rock, you'd expect One More Car, One More Rider--Eric Clapton's first live album since 1992's zeitgeist-capturing Unplugged set--to be full of well-tailored highlights from his biblically-proportioned (well, some people still call him "God") back-catalogue of bristly, well kempt blues.
However, such pallid flaws are only trifling grievances for One More Car, One More Rider is an engaging live document that finds Clapton far from asleep at the wheel.
'One More Car One More Rider' is the first live Eric Clapton release since his 1992, Grammy Award winning album 'Unplugged'.

Culled from the tour that's strongly been touted as Slowhand's last stand, this two-disc effort -- which takes its name from the original working title for 1986's August -- is a measured retrospective that seems designed to give a little taste of each one of the flavors in Clapton's musical kitchen.
This special edition of One More Car, One More Rider also includes a two-hour-plus DVD concert recorded in Los Angeles.
As a DVD, this release seems to work a lot better than it does as a CD, principally because Eric Clapton has developed a thoroughly convincing stage presence as a bluesman, and the skilled editing keeps the image in motion constantly without it ever being a distraction.

Eric Clapton’s double CD ‘One More Car, One More Rider’ features 19 tracks and several of his classics such as "Tears In Heaven," "Bell Bottom lues," "Layla," "Wonderful Tonight," and "Cocaine." This is Clapton's first live CD since his 1992 multiple Grammy-Award winning "Unplugged" and it features songs performed during his worldwide 2001 concert tour.
But at its best, it is a backlog of the Clapton that you know and love, full of his typical highlights and sadly with little hint that he is exploring new sounds.
‘One More Car, One More Rider’ features Eric's touring band members Nathan East (bass and backing vocals), Steve Gadd (drums), Andy Fairweather Low (guitar and backing vocals), Greg Phillinganes and Billy Preston (Hammond organ and keyboards), and David Sancious (keyboards and guitar).

Though he goes through the motions of playing the blues -- a cutting version of the perennial "Key to the Highway," "Hoochie Coochie Man," "Goin' Down Slow," among others here -- the heart of this album is closer to the NPR instrumental jam of "Reptile" than blues.
