  CNN - 'One True Thing' - September 25, 1998
Instead she would buy me things, a cheap but pretty print she would mat herself, a throw of some kind.
And as she arranged the throw or hung the picture she would say, smiling, "We're so different, aren't we, Ellie?" But she would never realize, as she said it, as she'd said it so many times before, that if you are different from a person everyone agrees is wonderful, it means you are somehow wrong.
Things like this were my mother's whole life.

Needing someone to care for his wife, maintain his lifestyle, and not wanting an outside nurse to be that person, George asks Ellen to put her career on hold and move back home to care for her mother.
Featuring a superb cast, excellent performances, a well-written script and great direction, "One True Thing" should please moviegoers who enjoy films such as "Terms of Endearment." Clearly one of the frontrunners -- in several categories -- for next spring's Oscar broadcast, this is one of those movies loved by tissue manufacturers.
As Ellen discovers the true nature and character of her father just as we do, we see Hurt's character unfold like a damaged flower.

 James Frey’s One True Thing
Figuring that a big lie is as easy to tell as a little one, Frey added to this fiction that he resisted arrest and fought with police while attempting to incite a riot among bystanders, and to have as a result served three months in a county jail.
None of this was remotely true (although Frey was drunk and had a minor mishap with his car, he was extremely polite to a police officer and spent a few hours in custody).
The worst thing about AA – and the experience Frey underwent at Hazelden – is its denial of the existence of valid alternative paths to ending addiction.

The story, told in flashback, begins with the interrogation of daughter Ellen Gulden (Renee Zellweger) by a district attorney (James Eckhouse) who is investigating suspicious circumstances surrounding her mother's death.
Besides, "One True Thing" is less about Kate Gulden's death than it is about Ellen's coming to terms with her parents' hidden flaws and strengths and, in a way, her own voyage of self-discovery that the tragedy precipitates.
Like that everyday, commonplace occurrence, "One True Thing" celebrates the very things you don't miss, or even know exist, until they are gone.

Besides, she adds, if there's one thing you learn early on in the antiques business, it's to not throw anything away, especially if you don't know what it is. Anyway, the toys would fly off the shelves and her antiques would languish.

Salon Entertainment | One Blue Thing
Things begin promisingly enough: When young New York magazine reporter Ellen Gulden (Renée Zellweger) returns home to Langhorne, a leafy, gracious town somewhere in the Northeastern megalopolis, for her dad's 55th birthday party in 1987, she seems to be walking into a haute-WASP suburban burlesque.
Evidently the point of this whole exercise (adapted by screenwriter Karen Croner from the novel by former New York Times columnist Anna Quindlen) is that the ambitious '80s career woman needs to integrate the lessons learned and sacrifices made by her stay-at-home mom in order to become a well-adjusted grown-up.
With Zellweger standing by like a weeping onlooker at a road accident, "One True Thing" deteriorates into a lurid, almost hallucinatory horror show, snatching incoherent fragments from "Cries and Whispers," "Meet Me in St. Louis" and "It's a Wonderful Life" as it careens to a close.

One True Thing movie review, In Film Australia
Even in Meryl Streep’s dying character - a woman who is suffering from terminal cancer - the ‘one true thing’ in her life is the simple fact that she is related by blood and love to the rest of her family.
One True Thing’s ensemble cast lifts the film to heights that would have been otherwise impossible to reach.
Some of the power he exemplifies comes from the things that he doesn’t explain or elaborate on, which perhaps motivated him to refuse to round off One True Thing in the happy and resolved way that made Stepmom - this year’s other film about a woman dying of cancer - pretentious and irritating.

With Meryl Streep and William Hurt in the cast, it's easy to conclude that "One True Thing" is bound to be an emotionally charged drama and that it's probably a good idea to bring Kleenex.
Focusing on her often tenuous relationship with her mother, the story -- adapted from the novel by Anna Quindlen -- is of the family's emotional endurance as Ellen struggles with having been thrown back in with her over-bearing parents while they all subconsciously prepare for the mother's inevitable death.
Directed by Carl Franklin ("Devil in a Blue Dress") with an eye for the light moments as well as the grief, "One True Thing" has the most honest, layered and authentic family dynamic of any American movie in recent memory.

One True Thing, based on the novel by Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Anna Quindlen, is the story of a determined, young, Harvard-educated journalist who is described by her coworkers as "cold," "condescending," and "remote." She is forced to return home and care for her cancer-stricken mother.
One True Thing is largely about getting to know who your family is, about that moment in your life when your father and mother start to become real people, with weaknesses, desires, and dreams of their own--just like everyone else.
One True Thing is about the extreme circumstances that can force us to look at our parents in a different light and finally see them as real blood-and-flesh people.

This is also true for individual poems of Blake.
Here, the true meaning lies not in the lines of the poems, but rather in the meaning that is derived from the context and relationship of one poem to its art work and to other poems.

One True Thing: (Cliff Eidelman) The score for One True Thing represented many turns for Cliff Eidelman, who had burst onto the scoring scene in the 1990's as one of the potentially great composers of the next few decades.
The film One True Thing passed with a moderate reception by audiences, though its brutally honest depiction of family life turned away much of the residual viewership, and both the film and score have faded into obscurity.
For One True Thing, Eidelman centers the musical output around solo piano performances and the sparse, but effective, accompaniment of a very small orchestra.

She's left home to establish herself as a promising young writer, but duty pulls her home (actually, unwilling/unable to do it himself, her father commands her to put her life on hold, come home, and care for her mother) to care for her mother (Streep) who is dying of cancer.

One True Thing is a film starring Meryl Streep as the cancer-stricken homemaker mother, Renee Zellweger as the daughter who quits her top-dog job to care for her, and William Hurt as the chilly professor who lets the women in the family do the heavy emotional lifting dying requires.
