Prefuse 73: One Word Extinguisher (2003): Reviews
One Word Extinguisher shows a range of emotional grappling usually foreign to instrumental hip-hop.
Perhaps the greatest expansion in Herren's sound is the range of emotion conveyed in One Word Extinguisher.
One Word Extinguisher opens and closes with a batch of great songs, but gets a bit soggy in the middle, treading similar ground several times over again and tossing out tracks that feel too similar to what we've already heard from him.

 Prefuse73 - Extinguished: Outakes
With One Word Extinguisher, Prefuse73 proved to the world that hiphop and electronica are the perfect couple.
Such a success was One Word Extinguisher, that all kinds of savvy I-like-Justin-in-that-quasi-ironic-way heads were begging at Prefuse to produce the club banger of the decade, something he is most definitely capable of.
It's fair to state that Prefuse, alongside Amon Tobin, is one of the most effortlessly cool producers in the world, pouring IDM stutters out of his fingertips straight into MPCs via the medium of imagination, with a tonal beauty and subtlety that Timbaland would swing for.

 PREFUSE 73 One Word Extinguisher
In the late seventies and early eighties, hip-hop artists were rivalling not only with words, but with creative musical structures too.
Yet, as the genre became less and less underground after the money-spinners had sniffed the potential of street culture, a new breed of pro-active artists have emerged, giving it a new breath of fresh air.
Featuring vocal performance from Diverse (Plastic) and Mr Lif, One Word Extinguisher also brings on board Dabrye, Daedelius and Tommy Guerrero for a string of collaborations.

Prefuse 73 . Extinguished [prefixmag review]
Dave: It isn't really clear at any point in the review what you actually think about the album, your descriptions of the album are less than vague, and you neglected to give it a number rating.
Brandon: Since Extinguished is a collection of outtakes and alternate versions of tracks from Prefuse's One Word Extinguisher, I'm surprised you didn't just cut and paste most of the text from your review of that one.
Dave: "Dubs That Don't Match" is one of the dopest tracks released this year, and despite it being two minutes long, it unfolds perfectly into a collage of piano, vocal samples, and a bit of glitch.

 Cyclic Defrost - Issue #004 (June 2003) - Prefuse73 — One Word Extinguisher (Warp)
One Word Extinguisher continues to keep Herron one step ahead of those who follow behind largely because Herron has continued to move down a track that has him aligned with indie hip hop rather than simply developing ‘mad dsp effects’.
Of course such effects are still evident but where others use a cold mechanical hand, Prefuse maintains a lighter touch managing to keep a semblance of funk in his beat manipulations and using his guest MCs (Diverse, Mr Lif, Daedelus) and producers (Dabrye, Tommy Guerrero) wisely.
Maybe, but as many other commentators have argued, One Word Extinguisher is a proper ‘new millennium’ hip hop record trying hard to resuscitate the ancient cut&paste plunderphonics and sound science of true old-skool hip hop.

Prefuse 73 had any outtakes at all after the 23-track behemoth that was One Word Extinguisher.

 Cokemachineglow.com - Music reviews
Both the anguished One Word Extinguisher and almost-equally-brilliant Extinguished: Outtakes showed why Herren earned such a strong reputation for his unbelievable beats and terrific sampling and added an emotional weight that has rarely been seen in hip-hop, especially of the instrumental sort.
The emotional purge of One Word Extinguisher and his subsequent move to Barcelona (seemingly brought on by the former and the weight of never meeting his Spanish father, to whom the album is dedicated) have inspired a much more guarded Herren on his latest project with Savath & Savalas.
Although much of his work has never been overly accessible, Apropa't seems to be taking pains to be well-removed from the listener.

The end result is an image of hip hop as an all inclusive sound, not something restricted by any arbitrary constraints as to what is or is not “real”.
One Word Extinguisher ends up conjuring images of a hip hop antecedent to this era of grossly over-exaggerated gangstas and swollen money clips.
This record is a wonderful accomplishment — instead of relying on tricks and methods explored on earlier records, Herren expands via reflection, tracing sounds back to their roots in hopes of finding a new path.

In Music We Trust - Prefuse 73: One Word Extinguisher / Extinguished: Outtakes
Scott Herren continues to be one of the leading underground hip-hop producers, even after his brilliant 2001 debut, Vocal Studies and Uprock Narratives, under the guise Prefuse 73.
His follow-up, One Word Extinguisher, begins where he left off, but this time around, Herren has given listeners a more complete lesson in how to switch up hip-hop.
Retaining the glitches and the abstract edge that had everyone scratching their heads over whether he was IDM or some new terrain of hip-hop, One Word delves deeper into Herren's distinct tastes, mixing in atypical R&B with even more countless cut-ups, tempo shifts and interludes.

Prefuse 73 . One Word Extinguisher [prefixmag review]
With One Word Extinguisher, Herren has once again launched an assault on the status quo by unleashing an astoundingly fresh, far-reaching, and unabashedly emotional record while staying true to the tenets of hip-hop.
Extinguisher serves as further proof that Herren is a master of finding ways to make the incompatible compatible.
The biggest difference between Vocal Studies and Extinguisher is not so much the method but the source material from which the latter is drawn.

A fascinating collection of glitchy breakbeats and inventive, melodic experimental techno, One Word Extinguisher is a set of electronica that's nearly as challenging as Autechre's relentlessly academic beat manipulation but just as funky and instantly gratifying as a Fatboy Slim flag-waver.

Though not the only one: Jazz's and punk's future-forward promises, as well as vinyl and indie culture's lone-wolf dilettantisms, have also affected their views of what delights could rest inside a grain of sand.
Even with their inclusion, he has little time for rappers, spending as many minutes slicing their every word into hectic little pieces ("The End of Biters" and "Southerners" both state this method explicitly) as making blip-hop prints for MCs to gloss.
Extinguisher sets a monster pace, and at 23 frenetic tracks, it's as overwhelming as the 45 minutes of Rounds is user-friendly.

When his full-length debut Vocal Studies and Uprock Narratives hit in 2001, Prefuse 73 landed in the spotlight; his music incorporated all the freshness of glitch, sample, beat, and scratch along with edgy words on top--plus or minus a few effects, of course.
Now older and wiser, Prefuse (aka Scott Herren, Atlanta native and current Barcelona resident) is back with One Word Extinguisher.

His latest album (which is a few months released as I write this), is also incredible, and different in ways that justify its creation independent of One Word Extinguisher, but this album in particular is special beyond words, even for the GOD that is Prefuse 73.
It is not nearly as abrasive and uncompromising as some writers would lead you to believe, but rather a heady mash up of new-school electro and (largely instrumental) hip hop that employs an arsenal of modern digital effects.
There is much that is summery and sweetly melodic on One Word Extinguisher, but most of it has been put through the ringer of digital manipulation.

"One Word Extinguisher" by Prefuse 73 - zBoneman Music Reviews
One Word Extinguisher is no different, and is probably his most refined release to date.
What Harren brings to the table is a melding of hip hop production that artists such as DJ Shadow, DJ Spooky, and RJD2 have perfected, with a blend of IDM music that artists such as Matmos, Oval and Autechre have idealized.
Harren also has a bit of wicked fun with other IDM masters such as Dabraye on the wonderfully disjointed "Uprock" and "Invigorate," and Daedelus on the beat box/bad ass oboe influenced "Busy Signal." At 23 tracks, there is one thing that One Word Extinguisher never is, and that is boring.

 Textura
On paper, Scott Herren's latest Prefuse 73 disc doesn't appear radically unlike One Word Extinguisher: structurally, it's an hour-long connecting stream of dense, succinct vocal and instrumental pieces framed by an intro and outro.
And rumour has it that, just as he followed up One Word Extinguisher with the equally satisfying addendum Extinguished: Outtakes, so too will Surrounded By Silence be followed by a related disc of collaborations with Madlib, Diplo, Four Tet, and Mia Doi Todd, among others.
Lif, and Diverse, the album remains primarily Herren alone; the new album, on the other hand, is almost entirely collaborations (with artists like Aesop Rock, D.J. Nobody, The Books, Claudia and Alejandra Deheza, Beans, Tyondai Braxton, and Camu), a move which consequently finds the Prefuse sound being stretched into startling new configurations.

'One Word Extinguisher' feels slightly strange on first listen, a quite disorienatting and confusing twenty three track throwdown with each track slamming into the next like a home made mix tape.

On One Word Extinguisher, Herren takes the tried-and-true sample formula and warps it out of proportion, creating rhythmic beats from seemingly chaotic sampling.
Its beats and sonic textures alone would satisfy any fan of any artists of the Warp label (Prefuse 73 happens to be on the label as well), and the skills of its several guest rappers any alternative rap lover.
The digital acrobatics have been reigned in a bit, compared to the cut-up stutter-fest of "Vocal Studies...", and "One Word Extinguisher" suffers for it.

Prefuse 73 One Word Extinguisher (Warp) Prefuse 73’s first full length Vocal Studies + Uprock Narratives was one of those rare albums where the first time I heard it, I could see myself listening to it over and over, for years to come.
While I don’t prefer the new record to the old, (I mean, if I did, would I have bothered to basically re-review the first one at a length almost equal to that of the second?) it is definitely a worthy follow-up.
Where the last record felt like a computer geek’s heartfelt interpretation of hip-hop, One Word Extinguisher seems to be an intellectualization of it.
