Dream - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
Dreaming is the subjective experience of imaginary images, sounds/voices, words, thoughts or sensations during sleep, usually involuntarily.
The scientific discipline of dream research is oneirology.
Dreaming is associated with rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, a lighter form of sleep that occurs during the later portion of the sleep cycle, characterized by rapid horizontal eye movements, stimulation of the pons, increased respiratory and heart rate, and temporary paralysis of the body.

BMCR-L: BMCR 2003.02.01, Holowchak, Ancient Science and Dreams
M.A. Holowchak earns credit for having written a readable introduction to oneirology and oneirocriticism, though his book originally in meant to be concerned only with the question whether ancient oneirocriticism and oneirology were up to the standards of what was considered 'science' in the Greco-Roman era.
Certainly oneirology cannot be separated from oneirocriticism because even dream interpreters rely on (sometimes not verbalized) conceptions of the origin and function of dreams.
Consequently the book's ten chapters are divided into three parts: Naturalistic Oneirology (I), Oneirocriticism (II) and Oneirology and Ancient Medicine (III, supplemented by Appendices B and C, "Galen's Diagnosis from Dreams" and "Secular Medicine and Religious Incubation").

Romanticism On the Net 18 (May 2000)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
But before the appearance of Coleridge on Dreaming, no book was wholly occupied with surveying and interpreting Coleridge's oneirological writings, and it looked as if Coleridge's inability to 'devote an entire work to the subject of Dreams' (a hope he expressed in The Friend) had extended to his critics.
But an 'historical exploration', which seeks to investigate 'Coleridge's responses to his dreams and to contemporary debates on the nature of dreaming' (I quote from the dust-jacket blurb of Coleridge on Dreaming), needs to adhere to both uniformities, so to speak.
It has no business interpreting Coleridge's dreams for him or interpreting his poems as if they were dreams, for neither kind of interpretation contributes to an understanding of his relation to contemporary oneirology.

Interpretation of Dreams by Sigmund Freud
In my many years' work upon the problems of the neuroses I have often hesitated, and I have often gone astray; and then it was always the interpretation of dreams that restored my self-confidence.
My many scientific opponents are actuated by a wise instinct when they decline to follow me into the region of oneirology.
Even the material of this book, even my own dreams, defaced by time or superseded, by means of which I have demonstrated the rules of dream-interpretation, revealed, when I came to revise these pages, a continuity that resisted revision.

JHOM - Tears - Mystical   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
In many cultures, dreams have been conceived of as channels of communication with other, spiritual realms, and this is the case also of Jewish mysticism.
We will look here at one particular dream-inducing technique elaborated upon in Jewish mystical texts — mystical weeping: that is, the effort to acquire, as the direct result of self-induced weeping, some paranormal consciousness or vision with information therein about some secret.
Thus, Jewish mysticism should be described as an activistic spirituality, one that assumes that it is within the power of the mystic to ensure the emergence of articulated experiences.

Deirdre Barrett, an assistant professor of psychology at Harvard Medical School who has been editor of the journal for five years, said beyond increased academic prestige, it will expand circulation of the journal to more libraries.
