  Onesicritus - LoveToKnow 1911
ONESICRITUS, or Onesicrates, of Aegina or Astypaleia (probably simply the "old city" of Aegina), one of the writers on Alexander the Great.
At an advanced age he became a pupil of Diogenes the Cynic, and gained such repute as a student of philosophy that he was selected by Alexander to hold a conference with the Indian Gymnosophists.
When the fleet was constructed on the Hydaspes, Onesicritus was appointed chief pilot (in his vanity he calls himself commander), and in this capacity accompanied Nearchus on the voyage from the mouth of the Indus to the Persian gulf.

 Alexander the Great - Sources
Onesicritus reckons each side of the included island, which is of a triangular shape, at 2000 stadia; and the breadth of the river, where it is separated into two mouths, at about 200 stadia.(3) He calls the island Delta, and says that is as large as the Delta of Egypt; but this is a mistake.
Onesicritus says that the greatest part of the coast in this quarter abounds with swamps, particularly at the mouths of the river, which is owing to the mud, the tides, and the want of land breezes; for these parts are chiefly under the influence of winds blowing from the sea.
Onesicritus approached, accosted him, and told him that he had been sent by the king, who had heard the fame of his wisdom, and that he was to give an account of his interview, if there were no objection, he was ready to listen to his discourse.

HEN Alexander the Great, having conquered most of his world, was resting with his armies on the Indus Plain in the pleasant spring of 326 BC, he turned his attention one day to a group of Indian holy men sitting naked in the sun, oblivious to the world around them.
Curious, the great conqueror dispatched Onesicritus, one of his brightest young officers, to find out what manner of men they were and what wisdom they had to impart.
The holy men told Onesicritus that to try to pass on their knowledge to his master through interpreters would be like trying to make water flow clear through many layers of mud.

The 'good' sources on Alexander the Great
Onesicritus is not heard of during the first half of Alexander's campaign and makes his first appearance in our sources in 326, when he translated the conversation between Alexander and the Indian sages at Taxila.
During the voyage to the south, Onesicritus was the helmsman of Alexander's royal ship; when a large part of the Macedonian army had to be shipped back to Babylonia, he was also present.
It seems to have consisted of two parts: the first half contained a description of India's borders, size, rivers, population, castes, animals -especially elephants-, armies and customs; the second half described Nearchus' voyage home.

Arrian was able to use sources which are now lost, such as the contemporary works by Callisthenes (the nephew of Alexander's tutor Aristotle), Onesicritus, Nearchus and Aristobulus, and the slightly later work of Cleitarchus.
However, he did remain in command of the fleet for the voyage from the Indus to the Persian Gulf, which he recorded in detail (and which was used extensively for Arrian’s Indica).
Its author is usually known as pseudo-Callisthenes, although in the Latin translation by Julius Valerius Alexander Polemius (beginning of the 4th century) it is ascribed to a certain Aesopus; Aristotle, Antisthenes, Onesicritus and Arrian have also been credited with the authorship.
