Ong Keng Yong has served as the Secretary-General of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) since 1 January 2003.
Ong was the Press Secretary to the Prime Minister of Singapore and concurrently the Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts from September 1998 to December 2002.
Ong holds a Bachelor of Law (Honours) from the University of Singapore and a Master of Arts in Arab Studies (Distinction) from Georgetown University (Washington DC, USA).

Ong said that there is a 'certain impatience' among members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations with Burma's foot-dragging on democracy, but the group has limited leverage with which to pressure the junta.
Ong chided the two regional giants late last month, saying ASEAN should ask them to be more persuasive with Burma and that there was little point in them being ASEAN's dialogue partners if they were not contributing on the issue.
Ong also said ASEAN was disappointed that Malaysia's Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar was unable to meet with detained opposition leader Aung San Suu kyi and junta leader Than Shwe during his visit to Yangon last month.

ASEAN secretary-general Ong Keng Yong has urged Southeast Asia to demonstrate the willpower to solve a recurring haze problem which affects the region's efforts to attract investors.
Ong said the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations is in the middle of "a big campaign" to invite European and US investors to a investor forum in Indonesia next week.
Ong said the haze agreement, if ratified, would be an effective way to put out the forest fires as it allows other ASEAN member countries like Malaysia and Thailand to swiftly mobilise their fire-fighting bridgades.

In an interview with AFP, Ong said money in a special fund set up to improve farm hygiene could be redirected to compensate farmers who lost their poultry flocks in culls during outbreaks of the deadly disease.
Ong, who was in Hong Kong on a scheduled visit to discuss economic matters with local government officials, said Asean members were sharing information on a daily basis through a communication channel called Focal Point.
Ong said Asean’s frugal resources would be best employed in preventative measures such as early warning alerts and close surveillance.

ONG Teng Cheong, in response to my reply to Maverick Politician, denied telling Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong in February 1999 that he wanted to stand for re-election (as President).
But Goh did advise Ong at some stage to see his doctors, and to have their reports on his medical condition published should he decide to stand for re-election.
Ong now says that he did not tell Goh earlier that he had decided not to stand, because he was waiting for the publication of the White Paper.

Two months after the ASEAN free trade area (AFTA) was fully implemented, visiting ASEAN Secretary-General Ong Keng Yong on Thursday acknowledged that many people in the region remained unaware of the benefits to be derived from competition under AFTA.
Ong expressed disagreement with the policies of some countries in maintaining high import tariffs on a number of products.
According to Ong, the adoption of competition policies and laws by individual member countries would promote, among other things, the protection of consumer well-being, address uncompetitive practices in enterprises, and make the countries more attractive to foreign investors.

The call was made by the 10-nations bloc’s secretary Ong Keng Yong during his recent visit to Tokyo.
Ong also urged the military government to be considerate to the position of the ASEAN by giving a definite date for the visit before the bloc’s summit of foreign ministers at Bali in April, according to a report by Kyodo news.
