In March 1938, while Japan and China were at war, the Akutagawa Award, a prestigious literary award, was presented in Kengzhou, China, to Corporal Tamai Katsunori (penname: Hino Ashihei) for his novel Funnyotan (A Story of Excrement and Urine).
Kingoro and Man had the typical Wakamatsu temperament, the "kawasuji" (river course) temperament, so called because it was found among people living along the Onga River, which flows through the Chikuho coal-mining district to Wakamatsu.
This temperament was a product of the drastic change brought by the coal rush, from which the Chikuho coal mines reaped large profits.
