Oni (Japanese folklore) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Oni (鬼) are fabulous creatures from Japanese folklore, similar to Western demons or ogres.
In the earliest legends, oni were benevolent creatures said to be able to ward off evil and malevolent spirits and to punish evil-doers.
Over time, the oni's strong association with evil colored the perception of the creatures themselves, and they came to be seen as harbingers or agents of calamity.

Oni Preview for PlayStation 2 - Gaming Age
On the outside, Oni might seem like the same old plot that’s been used a million times over only with switched names, but underneath the shell, Konoko will be finding out the truth behind her identity, and learn of things from her past that are crawling up from behind to haunt her in the present.
Bungie had developed Oni so that the player does not become entirely reliant on using their firearms; there will be limited amounts of ammunition scattered through each of the enormous 14 levels, and since the fighting system that Bungie is so unlike any other, they want you to use it.
Oni will arrive on the PS2 in January of next year, and PC and Macintosh owners will also have a chance to give Konoko a run when Gathering of Developers releases those verions at the same time.

 Intelliflix: Rent Game ONI
Oni tells the story of Konoko, an elite cop and one-woman SWAT team whose approach to fighting crime is a devastating combination of rational calculation and fighting fury.
There are some good things about Oni, like the good voice acting, the stylish cel-shaded graphics, and the comic book feel of the game, but it's overshadowed by all the horribly annoying gameplay flaws.
ONI would be extraordinary...if it were not for the fact that most games have that "extraordinary" ONI touch.

Section 2 of ONI is involved primarily in propaganda and data manipulation, both in the name of security and keeping the hopes of Humanity set high.
ONI may have previously known of Halo, and a lot of other things, if this trail is followed a while.
For some reason, ONI is often seen as a shadowy, sinister organization, where their agenda is not always clear. I think that the word, Oni seems to describe them perfectly. Oni is a Japanese term, and in English, translates roughly as "demon", "devil", or "ogre". Their features are often described as horned and fearsome beings.

 Review - Oni // PC /// Eurogamer
Her dashing good looks, human proportions and martial arts supremacy aren't enough to carry Oni the whole way, and it seems like the initial prognosis we made at ECTS last year was correct - Oni is more underwhelming than it should be.
The word "Oni" itself means "ghost" or "spectre" and that's a fair indication of how the game treats young Konoko, and how she has to act if she wants to survive.
Oni definitely has its moments, as four or more opponents close in on your position, making effective use of your arsenal imperative.

Oni never revels in any gratuitous amounts of violence or profanity and feels positively mild in comparison to some of today's top games that push the envelope of good taste.
Anime fans may also appreciate Oni as an interactive tribute to the animation style, but the story is generic beyond belief, and Oni never feels like an anime where it counts the most—in the gameplay.

Oni automatically saves your game at certain points of a mission, but there's no way to save your progress whenever you want to.

Oni performed respectably on our G4 test machine, even with Rage 128 graphics (Voodoo 4/5 and Radeon performance was obviously even better), although there was some noticeable performance loss, even with the higher-end Voodoo 4/5 and Radeon cards, in some of the game's wide open areas.

 IMG Review: Oni
If I had reviewed Oni right then and there, as I first played it, I would have been drowned in my own barrage of adjectives — “revolutionary!” “astounding!” “intense!” “earth-shattering!” — but the sad truth is, Oni took too long to come to market and made too many sacrifices along the way.
That’s not to say that Oni isn’t a thrilling game and a superior title in some respects; certainly there is no title on Mac or PC that has ever captured the thrill of true-3D melee combat so well, and very few on consoles have managed such a complete simulation.
Oni has a lot to offer many gamers — but during my journey through this game I saw so much that seemed left undone, or hadn’t been carried through to a logical conclusion.
