 Woodlouse
They are usually nocturnal and are detritovores, feeding only on dead plant matter.
They belong to the order Isopoda, suborder Oniscidea, with over 3000 known species.
In Britain there are 37 native or naturalized species ranging in colour and in size (3 - 30 mm) of which only five are common - Oniscus asellus (Common shiny woodlouse), Porcellio scaber (Common rough woodlouse), Philoscia muscorum (Common striped woodlouse), Trichoniscus pusillus (Common pygmy woodlouse) and Armadillidium vulgare (Common pill bug).

Invertebrate Zoology - About the World List of Marine, Freshwater and Terrestrial Isopod Crustaceans
It quickly became apparent, once we started to compile the names of Oniscidea, that a list of only valid or established taxa could not be assembled, given the state of oniscidean taxonomy.
The Suborders of the Isopoda are arranged alphabetically: Anthuridea, Asellota, Calabazoidea, Epicaridea, Flabellifera, Gnathiidea, Microcerberidea, Oniscidea, Phreatoicidea, Valvifera..
For every species or subspecies in the order Oniscidea, some indication of type locality or geographic distribution is provided, generally by state, occasionally by major island or major mountain range.

Woodlouse - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Woodlice (known locally under many names; see below) are terrestrial crustaceans with a rigid, segmented, calcareous exoskeleton and fourteen jointed limbs.
They form the suborder Oniscidea within the order Isopoda, with over 3000 known species.
Woodlice need moisture because they breathe through gills, called pseudotrachea, and so are usually found in damp, dark places, such as under rocks and logs.

Methods We compiled from the literature a data set of 176 species of Oniscidea (terrestrial isopods) distributed over 124 Mediterranean islands.
Evidence for a SIE was found, whereas area-range effects that are dependent on larger scale analyses were not unambiguously supported.
Main conclusions The Oniscidea fauna from small islands of the Mediterranean Sea is highly structured, with major and minor geographical patterns being identifiable.

 Suborder Oniscidea
The Oniscidea (formerly "Oniscoidea") are the only group of crustaceans fully adapted to live on land.
They are distinguished by: extreme reduction (1-3 articles) of the antennules; endopods of male pleopod 1 and/or 2 elongate, styliform, specialised as a copulatory apparatus; and, presence of a complex water-conducting system (Hoese, 1981, 1982A).
With over 4,000 described species, Oniscidea is the largest isopod suborder.
