GPF: Web Comics Appreciation Day, May 5, 2001
Anyway, I hope this little comic got the message out without being "preachy" or "whiny." Online comics are now a big deal, and their popularity continues to grow at an explosive rate.
Even in the case of Keenspot, most of its artists are semi-professionals; none of us do online comics solely for a living, and most of us hold down "day jobs" to actually pay the bills.
Online comics have always been a "grass roots" environment, when the fans are extremely important to its survival.

 OJR article: Comics Journalism Online
Comics Journalism: A Short History Online reporting about American comic books offers the same mixed bag of rewards and heartache as any journalistic endeavor with limited resources attempting to cover a criminally underreported and highly-marginalized industry.
If a popular professional was replaced on a comic book assignment at one of the 'Big Two' publishers (Marvel Comics, home of Spider-Man and the X-Men and DC Comics, Superman and Batman's publisher), she might explain her side of the story in a supportive online forum.
While many of these efforts were doomed by the fact that the American comics industry in the mid- to late-1990s was contracting with the speed of a collapsing star, the industry's expansion online did provide a place for the now 'name' online personalities, as well as writers crossing over from print.

OJR article: The Online Comics Gap
This leads inevitably to the prospect of "a la carte" service for particular comics; this is one area where that old hobgoblin "micropayments" still gets a respectful hearing, and many observers point to the success The New York Times has had in getting people to pay for its crossword puzzle as a model.
The three-panel comic strip is not an art form native to the web, and the greatest challenge in adapting it may be that readers bring different expectations and habits to online readership.
If there is one aspect in which newspapers largely have managed to reproduce their comic strip experience online, it may be this: Newspaper editors have famously tended to view comics as being, at best an annoying afterthought.

Marshall McLuhan, I found myself wholly taken in by McCloud's arguments that the many comics now available on the web represent a good first step of this art form into the digital age, but few to none of them manage to take advantage of their new location, acting as if they were still on paper.
I have to, because each comic usually has its own site dedicated to it, and while that's fine and good, that means I have to perform an increasing amount of (virtual) legwork as my list of good online comics expands.
It might become somewhat less than ideal for comics that use full-page layouts, where panel positioning can often be an art in itself, and the model might break down for those very rare comics which use panels in ways integral to their very meaning.

 Reinventing Comics
As an optimist -- and an ethusiastic one at that -- I was closely linked to the gargantuan corporate media Hype machine plastering ".com"s on every street corner throughout the 20th Century's last years; and when that bubble burst, it was assumed by many that it was time to burst my bubble as well.
The two halves don't always work well together, the storytelling is frequently stiffer and less convincing, and my enthusiastic advocacy of online comics is rarely tempered by some of the bleaker, more pessimistic scenarios offered by other writers in recent years.

Even the people currently in the industry are probably not able to reach their fullest potential because they have to spend a third to a half of their conscious time at a job that actually pays them for their efforts.
Well, there are three main battles to be won on this front; online comics need recognition, readers need an efficient way to pay the creators, and people who have found online comics they have the ability to pay for must want to pay for them.
